Syco and The Sun: The Thompson/Samson/ Wootton triangle
I don’t know if you’ve seen this post by @saracha33 and this post by @happilystrongforyou about the connection between Ann-Marie Thompson, the Global Head of Media for Syco, and Pete Samson, currently US Editor of The Sun UK? If not, you should because when I say connection, I mean that they are actually married which is… kind of a plot twist.
Those posts as well as their conclusions are highly interesting and it leads me to another rather obvious question: how is Pete Samson’s relationship with Dan Wootton? Do they get along? What is Dan’s role in this PR/media love affair that apparently lead to a very strict 1D het narrative being pushed out to the wider public.
The thing is, I could very well imagine that Dan and Pete have a bit of a competition going on and that Dan was not very happy about Pete getting to write the babygate exclusive. Could his have been the reason (or one of the reasons) his tonality towards 1D has changed so drastically over the last few months?
Was Dan promised a huge story by 1DHQ at some point of his career if he agreed to play along with their narratives (whch as we all know he eagerly did) only to find out that one of the biggest 1D stories to date has not been given to him after all but - due to now obvious reasons - to his colleague Pete who just happens to be married to 1D’s PR head instead?
I’m not saying it happened but it would explain so much. Especially since it must have come as a bit of a surprise to Dan considering Pete Samson hasn’t done a lot on 1D for quite a long time before that story broke.
Dan seems to be a very ambitious person – otherwise he would not have become Head of Showbiz at one of UK’s biggest newspapers which I’m sure is a highly sought after position amongst a certain group of people – and he seems totally the kind of person who takes things like that extremely personally.
I find this development very interesting. Things seem to have gotten rather saucy for 1D behind the scenes of The Sun lately and I wonder if the Samson/Thompson/Wootton triangle plays a significant part in it.
