The Rheum × hybridum (garden rhubarb) leaves are emerging, this herbaceous perennial produces long, edible leaf stakes (petioles) which are known as ‘sticks’ or 'stems'. Part of the crown of the plant can be placed under a forcing pot before the leaves start to emerge this will result in an early harvest of tender, pink rhubarb. Stalks will be ready to harvest up to three weeks earlier than uncovered crowns.

A weird patch of fuzz on the backside of this liquidambar leaf where the veins meet. The bluish oblongs at the top are the cross-section of the broken stem.

The new leaves of the large herbaceous perennial Crambe maritima (sea kale, sea cabbage,sea colewort) are just starting to emerge. The leaves will reach up to 75cm, forming a clump of large, wavy blue-green leaves with clouds of small white flowers in early summer. The fibres from last year’s petioles (leaf stalks) appear to have created their own woven textile on the soil surface.

This Clematis cultivar has been carefully trained up these steps into a London garden to welcome visitors. The roots of this deciduous climber need soil that is cool and moist but with free drainage, whilst the foliage revels in the sunshine. The plant climbs by twisting their petioles (leaf stalks) around any support they can find.
