I think "Pandemic Daydrinking" will be the name of my new apocalypse metal band. Today's Pandemic Daydrinking Wine: the 2010 El Serrano from @page.springs.cellars. This wine is a blend of 43% Mourvèdre, 40% Syrah, and 17% Petit Sirah, one of the oldest Arizona vintages in my stash. Immediately on the nose, the Petit Sirah in this blend is noticeable, providing scents of bergamot, and black tea, which intermingles with anise, dried plum, black cherry, and sandalwood. When first opened, there was a whiff of VA, but that dissipated fairly quickly. On the palate, the El Serrano is medium-bodied, with medium acidity. The tannins have faded away now, after 10 years. Juicy plum intermingles with jammy cherry, black tea, strawberry, pomegranate, anise, and red plums, rounded out by a tinge of nutmeg, sandalwood, and gentian. It has held up rather well, but I think that this wine will not benefit from any further aging, and I advise drinking sooner, rather than later if you happen to still have a bottle in your stash. Name: 2009 Gustafson Family Vineyards East Ridge Block Petite Sirah _________ My rating: 93 _________ My price: $13 from @winebid, not currently available online. _________ Not sure what this retails for, but candidate for value of the year at the price I paid. I don’t drink much Petit Sirah, so this was a fun change. Foreshadowing nose of oak, cocoa, dark fruit and spice. On the palate, this is a bold wine for sure, but drinking nicely at the 9 year mark. Classy oak, dark pure fruit, chocolate and tobacco all balanced in this wine that can stand up to almost any food. Still some acid remaining and mostly resolved tannins. The rosé was tied with The Spur (2015) for second place in the @murrietaswell tasting as far as I was concerned. This was a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petite Sirah, 18% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. Livermore Valley is apparently well-known for Petit Sirah, which adds in a dimension of place. (Also made me think of how often in AZ we add in Petit Sirah to our GSM blends).
