Part of important Roma-era street, building façade found at Plovdiv site

Remnants of what was one of the most important streets in Philippopolis, the ancient name of Bulgaria’s second city Plovdiv, have been found by archaeologists examining the eastern part of the former town square, the Agora.

To residents of Philippopolis, the main street would have been known as the Cardo Maximus.

At Plovdiv’s Odeon, archaeologists also have found large remnants of the façade of the building used for local government meetings during the Roman Empire.

Archaeologists already have examined about 10 metres of the paving of the ancient road, local media reported on August 13, and were surprised when they found large fragments of the Odeon’s façade.

Archaeologist Maya Martinova-Kyutova said that this was actually the main façade of the Odeon, a place where there were probably three to four entrances. Read more.

New archaeological studies have proven that in the 4th century BCE, people were living not only on the three hills of ancient Philippopolis – today, Bulgaria’s second city Plovdiv – but also on the lowlands around it, according to a January 3 report.

Excavations at the Eastern Gate of Philippopolis have revealed Hellenistic cultural strata that rewrite the history of the ancient city, Bulgarian National Television reported.

Archaeological research of the area of the Eastern Gate of Ancient Philippopolis has been going on for 40 years, but recent excavations in the western sector have surprised researchers, the report said.

Theatre of Trimontium

The spectator seats are orientated to the south, towards the ancient city in the lowland and the Rhodope Mountains. In outline, the theatre is a semi-circle with an outer diameter of 82 meters. The theatre itself is divided into the seating section (auditorium) and the stage (orchestra). The auditorium, the area in which people gathered, is hollowed out of a hill or slope, while the outer radian seats required structural support and solid retaining walls. The auditorium was not roofed. The spectator seats (cavea) surround the stage – the orchestra – which has the shape of a horseshoe, 26.64 meters long, includes 28 concentric rows of marble seats, divided into two tiers by an aisle (diazoma). The upper part of the tiers is interrupted by narrow radial stairways, which divide the cavea into wedge-shaped sectors (kerkides). The theatre also has a podium, which supports the columns of the scaenae frons.

Similar to all the theatres on the territory of the Roman Empire, in the theatre of Trimontium the honorary spectator seats were inscribed. There were inscriptions not only for the representatives of the city council but also for magistrates, friends of the Emperor, etc. Some honorary inscriptions show that the building was used as the seat of the Thracian provincial assembly. Built with around 7,000 seats, each section of seating had the names of the city quarters engraved on the benches so the citizens knew where they were to sit.
