MWW Artwork of the Day (9/22/22) Philips Wouwerman (Dutch, 1619–1668) The Riding School (De rijschool)(1660) Oil on canvas, 48 x 62 cm. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
A representative of Dutch Baroque, young Philips started his apprenticeship under the guidance of his father, Paul Joosten Wouwerman, a painter of Alkmaar. He spent his entire life in Harlem, whose guild admitted him in 1640. Wouwerman mostly painted small-scale works, specializing in landscape and genre painting, whose subjects included horses, hunting or camp scenes, smithies and inns. His studies dedicated to the representation of horses brought him fame and a celebrity that lasted well into the late 18th century. Wouwerman is known for his paintings with army camps, equestrian battles and hunting scenes, in which beautifully painted horses play an important role. Thanks to his attention to detail, these paintings are very lively and narrative. In this painting too, the emphasis is on the story: a few horses are saddled, while a woman with a child just manages to dodge the stairs of one of the animals.
