"Values-Based Recruiting" (VBR) is a tool that Panhellenic uses to promote more than just surface-level conversations between potential new members (PNMs) and active chapter members during recruitment. In this, we encourage both active members and PNMs to recruit based off of their personal and chapter values rather than the things that they observe in the short time they have with each other during party rounds. Here are some examples of comments that PNMs make that don't represent VBR***:
"Oh my gosh, I loved AAA because the woman I talked to had really cute shoes and we talked about the best places to shop in Seattle."
"Oh my gosh, I loved BBB because I realized how their sisterhood events range from henna sisterhoods to random dance parties in their living room."
"Oh my gosh, I loved CCC because I talked to a member who also played water polo and she knows my coach!"
*** Let us clarify, these conversations will happen in FFR and that's awesome! The connections made with these conversations (ie; learning about similar interests, what each chapter does for their sisterhood events, and making connections from outside the UW community) and finding similarities between PNMs and active members is crucial to building a strong foundation for further discussion through out the week. These conversations need to happen for a more values-based conversation to come next in their relationship with the chapter over the course of FFR.
If PNMs come into the recruitment process with knowledge of what values they're looking for in a chapter and sisterhood, they can ask questions to active members that reveal the values of the chapter and organization as a whole. Connecting with a chapter and using that connection as a tool to prioritize organizations throughout the week will ensure that PNMs find a sisterhood that shares their beliefs and priorities.
Phired Up is a resource we use year round to ensure that we are staying on track with our goal to provide a values-based recruitment to PNMs and active chapter members in the fall. Check out this link to see what they say about VBR and how it can help you make your big decisions during FFR!
"I don't want to go to the bar with you because you are going to see a bunch of people you know."
Me- "No, it's a Sunday night. They won't be busy, and I bet I won't see anyone I know." **I go to the bar and see John, Johnny, Jill, Katie, Norm, Jesus, Austin, and Tyler. Also meet someone named Casey.** It's not my fault I am socially excellent. Blame (Give due credit to) Phired Up.
Three Keys to Summer Recruitment - Phired Up Productions
This song sums up my alpha gam experience.... sometimes I really reflect on our founders and their intentions. A legacy probably wasn't something they could even dream to be this incredible. I have intentions to leave the best footsteps I can behind, to stand as a true woman of Alpha Gam and show others how much a woman of Alpha Gam can be.
A blog post examining recruitment from an outside perspective .... and one your potential new members may share.
"Being in a sorority shouldn’t require you to become someone different, it should just enhance who you already are - making you a better version, not a different one."
The first video post in our weekly inspirational series.
VIDEO DESCRIPTION/TRANSCRIPT: Video by Phired Up of several photos of fraternity and sorority members set to music ("21 Guns"). Series of text flashes on the screen. Text:
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself what you really want your fraternity or sorority to be?
What do you really want?
I want my fraternity to be BOLD.
I want my sorority to be STRONG.
I want it to last beyond my years.
I want my sorority to help others.
I want my fraternity to LIFT people up.
I want my fraternity...
I want my sorority...
to believe in something and to show those beliefs to the world.
I want my fraternity to last FOREVER.
I want my sorority to be better than when I joined.
I want us to redefine excellence
To change lives for the better
I don't want my fraternity to be held hostage by lesser members.
I want us to STOP doing things that jeopardize our future.
I want us to take a stand to be SEEN and HEARD.
I want us to be better than our highest aspirations.
I want us to SHOW UP.
To embody the teachings of our Ritual.
I want us to stop waiting
It's time.
I want us to ELEVATE to a place we can only dream of.
To be more than we are today.
What will it take to get what you want?
A good place to start is to find others...
who want the same things.
Let's get started.
