Kaijune 2026 Day 6: LUNAR

Kaiju: Phosphera

Lore:

Video footage started emerging of a massive lifeform that was on the moon. Designated as "Phosphera", she was a curious beast. She wouldn't harm the rover any time it took a picture of her, but she proved to be very skiddish if the astronauts approached with a small manned craft.

The study team that had been assigned to her found that she was similar to Mothra - but she was mantid in her body structure.

She was capable of deep space flight, but preferred to live on the moon. Her sustenance came from plucking rocks from the moon's surface and crunching them with her mandibles. There seemed to be some form nutrition in the rocks she devoured.

Ironically, this relaunched the "moon is Swiss cheese" joke into the zeitgeist.

Not long after, she was nicknamed "Queen of the Muensters."

Phosphera has never caused issues, she's proven to be docile. The fact that she's most likely been on the moon the entire time that things were going to hell while Godzilla was alive had sparked a meme about her: "Phosphera is such a mood, I also hide in my house all day to avoid conflicts."

So Godzilla, being film franchise that dates back to the 20th century, understandably lacks a large female cast, I wanted to see how many female kaiju the series actually has, but while thinking this over an interesting thought occurred

Japanese, as a language, has some differences regarding pronouns compared to English, and a lot of Kaiju get referred to in much more gender neutral language in original Japanese than they do in English, this has resulted in some interesting fan interpretations over the years regarding the genders of kaiju, and you bet I'm going to catalogue the ones I've encountered

Starting off, the explicitly canon female kaiju of the Godzilla cast:

Mothra

Biollante

Zilla (I think the movie tried to deny it, but the cartoon confirmed it, although final wars zilla is another question)

Megaguirus

Monsterverse actually brings a number of explicitly female kaiju into the fold including:

The female Muto from 2k14

Barb, the other female Muto

Scylla

Tiamat

Na Kika (formerly Kraken)

Shimo

Phosphera

Some of the other unseen titans from King of the Monsters might also be ladies, but given as they are still unseen, that's just blind speculation

Now we get to the interesting part, the fan interpretations

Manda, Kumonga, and Destoroyah all being female is a pretty common and old fan interpretation, I know from firsthand experience that it at least dates back to the 2000s, but it could even be older

Baragon by comparison is far more recent, and I know for a fact this interpretation can be sourced primarily to the fact that in GMK, Baragon's performer was Rie Ota, and a behind the scenes clip of her doing the roars in the suit made waves around the fandom and even outside it in the 2010s

Hedorah is another more recent one, but interestingly enough I've also seen enby, bigender, and genderfluid interpretations of Hedorah as well. I guess there's something about the smog monster that screams gender to fans

Titanosaurus is again a newer interpretation, but fascinatingly a even newer idea has popped up in the past couple years that Titanosaurus is the kaiju equivalent of a femboy twink

Rodan being female is a very interesting case, both in origin and mainly due to the fact it only really applies to the Showa continuity and various fan continuities that desire. Basically the origin of this is that in the original 1956 film Rodan, there are two Rodans, a mating pair. At the end they both fall into Mt. Aso. When Rodan reemerges from Mt. Aso in Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster, there's only one. There's been speculation for years as to the origin of this Rodan, but for the longest time it was either assumed to be the male or somehow the child of the pair from the original movie. But in 2010s a new idea rose to greater prominence: What if the Rodan that survived and subsequently appeared in the rest of the Showa films was the female of the pair?

Battra is an uncommon interpretation, but I have observed it

@lydiathespiderqueen did some fanart of a female version of Toho's Frankenstein, as well as the Gargantuas, and it's really good

and @thesilkenlair did a compelling analysis of Spacegodzilla being female due to possessing physical characteristics of Biollante, as well as their behavior in the movie lining up disturbingly well with a phenomenon in nature where an animal will kill or try to kill the extant children of a prospective mate so undivided attention can be given to it and any potential offspring it may have

I just finished most of the next renders for Monsterverse NEO

Starting up with Godzilla’s Mentor and the King before him, Dagon

Dagon in this AU is basically more like Optimus Prime considering if he’s supposed to be an older but more peaceful Godzilla makes me believe he was the one who taught Goji the ways of balance some people like to say Dagon is like Godzillas dad, so in this AU he’s basically like an Father Figure to Goji, Xenilla (Spacegodzilla) and Gaia (Biollante) (in speaking of which, Godzilla’s real parents will soon be discussed with soon)

And here’s where Dagon is reincarnated

Technically it was Monarch’s idea to bring back Dagon, which is the Kiryu project, Kiryu mostly functions the same as his Toho Counterpart, only this time because of Monarch’s compassion towards him they allow Kiryu to rest whatever he wants to pretty much go to show Monarch really ain’t like the soulless company that is Apex, also BTW I also based Kiryu’s design on a Stick Nodes model of a Monsterverse styled Kiryu that mostly took inspiration from Slicks version of Kiryu

Up next is the Approximate Lizard, Gorosaurus!

For Gorosaurus I mainly took inspiration from LilburgerD4s design of the character, I know most people would have wanted me to use Dominions Giganotosaurus as some reference or inspiration but I wanted my Gorosaurus to look more different than going to that direction which is why I went with this Gorosaurus design, his eyes also used to be a lighter red but I decided changed his eyes to Orange for more look feel and emotion, also it would be interesting if I based Gorosauruses personality on Speckles the Tarbosaurus for this AU

Up next is the Ravager Lizard King who is the Vastatosaurus Rex!

They are a much more Bloodthirsty and much more deadly Evolved descendents of the Tyrannosaurus Rex while Gorosauruses species where an somewhat more peaceful but still deadly Evolved descendants of Carcharodontosauridae, like with Gorosaurus, their designs are highly inspired by LilburgerD4 which I loved his redesign of an Monsterverse Styled V-Rex, Apparently Vastatosaurus Rexes were the strongest land predators of the Hollow Earth with the actual strongest being Evolved descendants of Megalodon called Necrolodons who lived in the Hollow Earths Ocean, and don’t get be started on the bite force of an V-Rex, their bite is so strong that it wouldn’t just tear chuck out of Godzilla but would also be strong enough to rip Mechagodzilla limb by limb (also not to mention that like Mutos, Vastatosauruses also have thick skin that help them feel durable from atomic beam attacks)

Also for some lore story, Gorosaurus was also long time enemies with V-Rexes due to the fact they hunted down his kind to near extinction hence why Gorosaurus despised these Ravager Lizard Kings

They also unlike with Gorosaurus who became allies with Kong after their temporary rivalry, the V-Rexes stay as Rivals towards Kong and they also showcased while the Vastatosaurus Rex represented the long time rivalry between Kong and any Carnivorous Theropod since the 1933s. Gorosaurus on the other hand represents the potential of Kong becoming allies with them

Next up is King Under The Mountain, Methuselah!

Methuselah shall have more justice in this AU due to the fact that all the other Titans will be portrayed more as a characters than just a background animals or plot lines, nothing much with Methuselahs appearance, it’s just that he’s more grumpy and OLDDDDD, but despite that hes still “younger” than Shimo, according to Monsterverse NEO lore, he actually gets the name because he’s was also the mountain that the final resting place for the oldest human who had ever lived (that said human wasn’t as old as the Methuselah myth, but I think it would make sense for Methuselah to be called that), rumor has it that his body was buried inside methuselahs back as tribute for the oldest man who has ever lived on earth

Up next is the Ice Siren who is Scylla but, different….

Now, let’s face it, The official monsterverse having Scylla get killed off by Godzilla is totally the definition of wasted potential and it caused a lot of controversy so here’s an idea that happens in this AU where Scylla comes back

In this lore, Scyllas death by the hands of Godzilla caused triggered war between him, Tiamat, Typhon, Charybdis and the rest of the titans who are now furious and against Godzilla thinking he has now lost his way, because of this Monarch wanted to stop this war to bring Scylla back to life and give her a second chance by reincarnating her as an cyborg as attempt to have her change her ways and make her and Godzilla apologize to each other, And now introducing Project-Cyber-Scylla, the redeemed Cyborg Siren

Due to Scylla’s new life and cybernetics, she has been buffed more than her original self, she now has a mechanical armored shell stronger than her original shell and she can also freeze stuff faster and colder with her new liquid nitrogen ink breath abilities as her abilities were used from Shimos ice energy

And yes while in this AU, Scylla and Godzilla will STILL have a dislike towards each other, Scylla this time learned her lesson of not disturbing the balance and with the help of Monarch and her “apology” to Godzilla along with his “apology” back towards her, she now became at first a Titan Destroyer to Cybernetic Protector

Up next is the Roaring Animal of the Jungle who is Behemoth!!

An Idea I always had was that I want to have Kong and Behemoth form a bromance with each other, considering I hear in lore Kong’s and Behemoths species were ancient allies in the actual Monsterverse so I think it would make sense for Behemoth to become allies with Kong faster and better than with other Titans due to the fact the two have similar things and common and how their kind help each other which is also a thing explained in this AU, now Behemoth be looking different you see? I wanted to give Behemoth an glow up, like with Monarch did with Kong, they gave Behemoth his own tech armor and also armored up his Tusks to make them do more lethal damage to his enemies (fun fact: I also had a concept idea where Behemoth can also regenerate his tusks, think like Wolverine and his claws), Monarch also gave Behemoth a Mount on his back for Kong to ride on him in which I based Behemoths war armor design on war elephants especially using those war elephants from Primal and the Elephant War Mount from Crimson Desert

Also a Friendly reminder I’m giving Behemoth more justice than how he was protrayed in most Monsterverse fan what ifs (especially with Goji Guys what ifs where they have Behemoth being killed as some shitty trend as a way to disrespect him)

Unlike with Bitchass Gojilander (Satazillas) who was less like a True Godzilla due to his hateful nature and slow decent into madness, Barb the Queen Muto acts less like a True MUTO due to her being a pacifist, Barb the Queen Muto is the also the only MUTO who isn’t rivals with Godzilla with Good reason, this goes back to the fact she one of those Muto who knows the truth the Mutos and the Gojira species weren’t always an rival species and actually started as Great allies before their unforgiving war (blame Satazillas for angering the Muto species) which led to the Prime Muto Killing Dagon, Barb the Queen Muto really didn’t like the direction their kind went and wanted to be an pacifist in which because of this the Prime Muto kicked Barb out of their kind for being a Intelligent Pacifist in which Barb didn’t seem the mind since she already knew what her species was doing was already wrong, ever since then Barb became the first Muto in years to actually respect Godzilla despite Godzilla not really trusting her but understanding anyway since Barb was an reminder that not all Mutos are malevolent parasites who disturb the balance, Barb the Queen Muto also glow purple legs instead of Red Legs which represents her being different from rest by being a Parasitical Pacifist who restores the balance in a good way

up next is the Bringer of Rainbow Lights who is Phosphera!

I gave Phosphera a lot of design changes from her being an Griffon like Titan to an Owl Deerish Titan, especially with changing her wing colors but here is the final look for her (I hope so) Since she was a scrapped Titan in the official Monsterverse as a placeholder for Mothra, I feel like it would be interesting if I had her as companion for Mothra who chills in the Hollow Earth with her and the Iwi, I also think I it would be interesting if Phosphera became an friend towards Rodan and Rodans and Phospheras relationship would be like a Jax and Ribbit relationship from TADC, speaking of which since If Rodan were to talk he would be voiced by Michael Kovach and would sound like Jax, if Phosphera were to talk she would be voiced by Skye Redden and would sound like Ribbit too LOL

And Finally we have the two Pyscho Mollusks, Katatsumur

and Namkuji

Ah yess…. Katatsumuri and Namkuji, the species responsible for hunting down and killing Gameras species, basically Gamera’s equivalent to Hunter Rivals to what The Mutos and Skullcrawlers were to Godzilla and Kong, like with Atlantean Sea Turtles who were Gamera’s species, Katatsumuris can go in their shells and fly around in the sky like a spike ball and also acting like a spike ball by launching their spikey shell into enemies either to stab and being cuts into them or could also carve into them with their spikey shell like a massive bullet, Namkuji being an Slug titan may as well lack a shell and lack flight but the glowing blubs on his back give him an unique ability to slide very fast (similar to the Flash or Sonic but a bit slower but still fast) leaving Dissolving Acid Slime which burns everything in its wake, but what Katatsumuri and Namkuji both have in common is the ability to Shoot lethal burning Lazers, as one is a Deadly Snail that can fly and the other is Deadly Slug who can sprint fast, Katatsumuri and Namkuji both make a terrifying and pair deadly in which they are no wonder why Gamera’s species stood no chance against the underwhelming amount of them, their motivations so horrid that unlike with Mutos and Skullcrawlers it’s basically speculated that Katatsumuris and Namkujis were both Spawn species from Qolvaonizaxa to massacure other Titans to bring more power to him, not to mention Katatsumuris and Namkujis both have horrific roars that sound like twisted laughter in which makes them way more even than Mutos and Skullcrawlers

Two Fun Facts about them: the first Katatsumuri discovered by Monarch in 2015 during Gamera’s discovery was also nicknamed as “Titanus Lou Carcolh” named after the mythical Snail beast from French folklore due to the first Katatsumuri being discovered in France

And Two: Namkujis design is also inspired by Namegon which is a Kaiju from Ultra Q (the original Ultraman) which means he’s sorta the Monsterverse equivalent to that Ulltraman Kaiju

Mothra wasn't in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire every step of the way. At one stage, which appears to have overlapped with principal photography, she was replaced with an original monster called Phosphera (alternate spellings abound). Director Adam Wingard explains:

“There was briefly another character called Phosphera that we had in place of Mothra. But Mothra was always what the character was written around,” Wingard told TheWrap. “And there’s this false narrative online that this other character tested badly, and then we were like, ‘Let’s get Mothra.’ The plan was always Mothra. But we weren’t sure if we were going to be able to get Mothra. And once we tested the movie, we had the previous version of that, and by then, things had cleared up and we were able to do Mothra.” Wingard continued: “It would have been really dumb to not do Mothra because if you look at this other creature, it did and said everything the way Mothra does things, but it would have been another creature. It would have been very disappointing if, ultimately, we wouldn’t have been able to land that. I don’t like that some people think that it wasn’t the plan all along. If you look at the very first draft of the script, it always says Mothra.”

There's still a trace of Phosphera in the movie by way of an Iwi mural, which also can be seen in the background of some staff/cast interviews. And you'll notice no one in the movie ever says "Mothra" while facing the camera, suggesting that all of those lines had to be redone.
