hello! this is a quick, simple technique (literally takes a minute) that you can use for your graphics:
i primarily use this for twitter headers, but this can be used for any other image that you would like to use for your graphics!
caution: if your image is not from official art or your own creation, please make sure that you have permission to use it! for instance, websites like this and this allow for personal use (i.e. editing for creative purposes w/o profit), but if you use images from other websites (ex. photoshop blogs, deviantart, etc.) make sure that their terms of use are being met!
also this tutorial is being made with photoshop cc 2014 (yes i know it’s ancient but so is my dying laptop lol) and windows 10, so there might be some discrepancies if you use a different photoshop/OS version! (although it should be similar overall)
first and foremost, get your image opened on photoshop (it is okay if your original image has a white background! this technique will make it so the image still appears transparent on a colored background):
next, apply black and white and invert adjustment layers by clicking here on the bottom right corner:
your work space should now look like this:
now merge all 3 layers to become one layer by selecting them all and right-clicking, then selecting “merge layers”:
select the newly merged layer and click on the drop down menu on the right side that says “normal,” then select “screen”:
the image itself shouldn’t look any different, but it will make sure that everything that is black becomes “transparent” to any other background.
now simply create a new psd with the background of your choosing and drag the layer with your image in:
and you’re set! in my final version, i lowered the opacity of the image layer to 35%. but if it seems like the image is too faded, duplicate the image layer by right clicking and selecting “duplicate layer,” and you can keep playing around with both layer duplication/opacity until you like the finished product
For @grayacejace - hope it will help you out a lil bit ! Graphic heavy because... Idk how to make tutorials. xD I’m using Photoshop CC but I think it should work on any version with timeline.
01. Make a gif or open up the one you want to use. I like to make it on my own because it gives you more control over base gif - how intense the colors are from the start etc. I’m mostly slapping the psd here - go wild ! Here I used ‘Armor’ by itscolor & ‘Bogota’ by suiomi. Now, I got from this:
To this:
02. Change the gif from frames animation to timeline. How to do that? Frist, click a little list icon on the down right & chose ‘select all frames’
& click Alt + Crtl + a to select all layers. Now, we go to the left down corner and click this lil icon to open timeline.
And then on the top bar:
03. The Glitch. Now, there when it becomes a little tricky. First, duplicate the gif ( right click on mouse + duplicate layer... ) and then using Marquee Tool select half of the gif.
& makes a vector mask over a duplicated layer using this icon under layer window.
Click on the duplicate layer with a right mouse ( right button on mouse? XD ) & chose ‘Blending options’. Under ‘advanced blending’ you will find channels. If you know how to make the ‘fake 3d’ effect, I’m pretty sure you know how to use that. If not, here is a very good tutorial for it <3
Now, as you can see, when you moved layer to have the 3d effect, it’s only moved a half of it ;) Duplicate the layer ( the one that you just changed channels on ! ) and click quickly two times on the mask & chose ‘invert’. Move the layer in opposite direction to make the glitch.
Here is the moment to go creative ! Trim the layer, move it around till you will be happy with the effect. Here how it looks for me now:
04. Converting to a smart object & makes frames. I like to have control over how quick my gif is and working on this with timeline is something i hate, that’s why i always go back to framed animation - but before it can happen, the gif must be on one layer. Chose all layers and everything on timeline & convert it into a smart object just like you did before.
Now, we go to the menu on the right on the timeline & chose ‘convert frames’ & ‘flatten frames intro clips’.
And convert to frame animation. ( left down on timeline )
05. Preparing to save xD Look at your layers - there is n Frames and one layer that is still a smart object. Delete that one - you don’t need it anymore. Now make sure that on the first frame you have already there is ‘ 0 sec’ as a delay for now. Got to right icon on the top of frame animation section & chose ‘make frames from layers’.
After that is like with any other gif - select all frames, set up delay ( here i used the 0,05 one ) & save for web ( alt + shift + ctrl + s ) . Don’t forget to change looping options from once to forever !
And here we have final gif:
Sometimes i’m using the psds after making the effect, which looks like this
but I think the best way is to just poke things around till you will find out what is working the best for you ! I hope I helped out a little bit <3 Have fun !
