Phylums “Phylum Phyloid” 2015. Dirtnap Records. Limited edition translucent green vinyl (very helpful to see my Dirtnap Records slipmat!). Punchy, punky power pop from Milwaukee, Phylum Phyloid is the garage rock band’s first LP. Infused with 60′s surf, it’s super extra bubbly fun and highly danceable. Though it’s been awhile since we’ve seen them - and probably awhile since they’ve played out, too - they’re really fun live (we last caught Phylums at Anodyne in MKE in 2018). My top tracks on Phylum Phyloid are the opener “Can’t Get Through,” “Cold Coffee” (the video, linked below, is adorable and features the now-shuttered Fuel Cafe in Riverwest at the start), “Route 66″ (not a cover but has a definite wink-and-nod to the original), “Time Capsule” and the ode to the household appliance: “Vacuum Cleaner.”
Phylums “Decisions” b/w “Vexed” 2015. Dusty Medical Records. We saw Milwaukee’s Phylums last night when they opened for Greg Ashley at Anodyne. Neither track on this single are available online (or at least i couldn’t find them) but here is a video of them playing "Cold Coffee” a couple of years ago.
They don’t play out much and haven’t released anything in awhile, but their melodic and harmonic 60′s inspired twangy garage punk was super-upbeat and fun...unlike Greg Ashley, who plays solo acoustic guitar and has some of the most wrist-cutting level of depressing songs I’ve heard.
We made it through most of Ashley’s set but I was literally falling asleep and starting to feel sick (turns out it wasn’t his music but probably what I ate for dinner) so we had to leave before seeing Space Raft, another Milwaukee band on Dusty Medical that I really like. Fortunately Space Raft does perform quite a bit - and is working on a new album - so I’ll get to see them again soon.
aldebaran, pegasus, hydra, & asteroid!
Aldebaran: What’s something you care desperately about?
i don’t understand this question but i care about a lot of things. lots of people have told me that i have a big heart and it’s. very true
Pegasus: Favourite place to be?
in my bed with my soft blanket and the window open.....the outdoors would b my fave except for bugs. i hate bugs.
Hydra: Favourite sound?
the sound of a fan going actually. it’s so calming
Asteroid: What does your dream life look like?
um my dream life would be me being happy or at least ok with life at all times?? like no more sad charlie. my brain would work itself out and i would be ok and everything would be good. i would’ve found someone i love and who loves me back and we’re happy together. i grow thick skin and i stop caring what others think and i feel better. i’m good and happy and i have a wonderful life.
Pie charts of the phylums and each species in their respective phylum that we found at Abalone Cove.
I need to give the scientists who spend their life naming every living organism a shout because you give it a fancy name that I can’t pronounce or spell because ya’ll change it like every year which annoys my professor which then annoys me because he makes our exams HELL so thanks guys
I am determined to keep this up.
And after tomorrow I might have a little bit of time. i need enough time to set up a queue. I have just been DROWNING in Biology. I have the Biology Department Head for my professor and the Laboratory Head for my Biology Lab Professor. Both have their Doctorate, and by no means are easy. PLUS it's a 5 week course that has to fit an entire semesters worth so basically I'm in biology 6 hours a day. Woo. But I have an exam tomorrow so I have a night of rest (from biology, still have math on top of it).
It feels really good to be back in school though.
