She looks so tired. I can relate.
My favorite five Inktober2021 pieces done with pen/watercolor.
The sketchbook paper has a nice thickness to it, but I don’t think it’s as thick or the same as other watercolor papers. It did the job for these doodles/loose watercolor attempts, however.
As I mentioned a few posts ago, I mainly saw this inktober as a side challenge to experiment with watercolor in a way that could hopefully keep me out of creative block by feeding back into my digital art. Also, I don’t lose touch with the feeling of hand-drawn art.
There were two palettes that I used throughout the challenge. One of them is a Reeves set I’ve had for the longest as a birthday gift. It was very portable and had great detail brushes but crappy pigmentation (chalky). I really wanted to like it because the tin it came in is cute! Oh well. I eventually started to use the Dong-A set more. (I randomly grabbed this palette when I was in the Philippines a couple of years back). The Dong-A set had better color/blending and the brush worked well for slightly bigger areas. I still used the Reeves brushes for details.
It took me awhile to get into the mindset of using complementary colors for deeper shading. I spent hella time and energy on color mixing. If only I was better at sticking to simpler colors. That would’ve lead to more time for worrying about form and flow. And even if the results weren’t totally accurate, the color pop would’ve been a good opportunity to experiment stylistically.
Did I mention that this challenge was time consuming, even for small pieces? There were days where I would blaze through three prompts in one day in what little free time I had left. A lot more things outside of my art time ended up occurring than I expected! Maybe I’ll check out other prompts/challenges on a smaller scale in the future.
Oh, and here’s a fun fact about the Raven prompt: The pose and expression was supposed to be a veeery subtle joke/reference to That’s So Raven. I ended up drawing a side-view. ^^”
