this is part of a longer post that's directed towards Disney's new movie Hexed (which i have thoughts about and i might make a post on) but this part just pissed me off and made me laugh at the same time.

i personally liked Elio but i don't really care whether other people like it or not, but WHAT DO YOU MEAN "bean mouth that's been used in tangled"????

this is bean mouth to you? does this scream bean mouth???

whenever people complain about the bean mouth artstyle (which i honestly don't get the hate train, i'll be honest. people just want something to complain about), they're usually talking about movies like Luca and Turning Red. "bean mouth" is literally referring to the bean shape that their mouth makes when they smile or grin.

see that? that's the shape of a BEAN 🫘 that's why it's called BEAN MOUTH.

where, in Tangled, do you see a bean mouth??

i really can't take these people seriously because it's clear they know nothing about art, the way they group these things together. Tangled is just 3D animation. it does not have a bean mouth artstyle.

and Elio isn't even by Disney, it's a Pixar movie! yes, Pixar is owned by Disney but then again, Disney owns everything. but Pixar has been doing 3D animation since the beginning of time.

if this person is really complaining about the bean mouth artstyle, i get it, because that is fairly recent for Pixar. but clearly, op doesn't understand the difference between 3D animation and a specific artstyle, if they think that the bean mouth style started with TANGLED.

also yes, Elio was similar to Lilo and Stitch. but it's not the exact same. there were a lot of fun and unique additions that made Elio stand out as a movie. there's a heartwarming father-son relationship with the literal villain, which was very fun to watch. there's even some body horror with Elio's clone, and it was legitimately a little freaky.

and the entire plot is a lot different from Lilo and Stitch. yes, it's about a neurodivergent kid who's lonely but guess what. that description fits a DOZEN DIFFERENT movies. it's not owned by Lilo and Stitch. even the alien part is not that unique. there are plenty of movies about kids going into space or befriending aliens.

and i get it. we all hate Disney, and i am no exception. i'm not defending Disney the multimillion dollar organization here. i'm defending the creators of these movies. the initial pitch for Elio was a lot more unique and it's sad they didn't get to do that. but it's still commendable that the creators were able to put out a good movie, despite the shitty company they're working for.

people can dislike movies. they can criticize these movies. but it's really shitty to project your anger at an organization towards the people who are actually making an effort despite the circumstances. and it's especially hard to take y'all seriously when you don't even know what you're talking about and compare two very different artstyles to try and support your argument.

People hate lesbian headcanons so much that once a character is confirmed to be a lesbian or is heavily lesbian-coded, the first thing people will ask for is proof. Like it's an accusation or something. God forbid said lesbian character has smiled at exactly ONE man for like a millisecond, then all of a sudden it's “UMM ACTUALLY THEY R CANONICALLY ATTRACTED TO MEN SO….”

You have no idea how many “has Disney said anything about this?” and “If Disney hasn't outright said anything then I can't take this as the truth” responses I've gotten towards my posts (especially my pinned) when there's so much canon proof of Merida being a lesbian in all of the properties and pieces of media that Disney themselves owns that they don't have to say anything.

Not to mention y'all use her comphet as a means to say she's straight in Bravely when her love interest is literally canonically non-binary???

Us: Merida is a canon lesbian

Them: “But you failed to consider where there is a brief mentioning of Merida’s childhood in Bravely where she was attracted to a BOY. 🤓”

Meanwhile, what Merida actually said and meant: “For a short period of time during my childhood I was attracted to the body and build of a boy but the more he spoke the more I realized I wasn't really attracted to HIM at all. Ever since then, I haven't gone out of my way to find the right man for myself someday because I knew they'd all anger me, bore me, and fail to give me what I really want. It is for this exact reason why I do not care for Feradach’s male appearances whatsoever, and I really only care for who he is internally: a genderless, bodiless being made of air whom is kind, curious, and loving. That is who I love, no matter what physical form he takes. I love Feradach internally, not externally. His physical forms don't matter to me, only his truest and happiest form made of air because that is his true self. Brave has always been about internal vs external change, and Bravely is the perfect sequel to that. Don't dismiss the message of Merida’s story and her growth as a person just because you want to have a nonexistent gotcha moment out of a pathetic desperation to erase her canon lesbianism and take a beloved character away from the lesbian community and erase the representation she gives us.

i’m so sick and tired of liberals in the LGBT+ community clapping like trained seals whenever some tiny fucking crumb of representation is thrown our way. they’ll be like “OMFG this new movie (Onward, in this case) has a lesbian character!!! this is huge!!!” meanwhile it involves a tertiary character, and the only confirmation is a single line about her girlfriend’s daughter. we never even SEE her girlfriend, not even a PICTURE for fucks sake, but everyone is like “this is huge for Disney!!!”

except it’s not. it’s really not. now, i DO love the fact that the character is played by an actual lesbian because that kind of representation in acting is so goddamn important. i just wish we would stop acting like every crumb thrown our way is a massive fucking feast when we could be getting so much more.

With the recent release of “Elio”, there’s been a lot of revived discoursed surrounding Disney, Pixar, and originality in their movies. I’ve seen a lot of people shaming others for not watching the movie, going “Oh these people beg for originality but ignore it when we do get it”.

Originality is (understandably) quite wanted, yes, I too am sick of constant franchise oversaturation, but what these people fail to consider is that being original is not always a one-way ticket to being considered good

(That last bit isn’t meant to be a dig on Elio, I haven’t seen it yet as of the time I sent this ask)

oh yes, i saw some of those posts and i found it a bit absurd too. i do think that people should watched elio because it's a genuinely good movie, not just because it's an original movie.

i can understand why people are starting to veer away from disney and pixar so to shame them for not watching a new movie is only gonna make them NOT want to watch it.

i think the idea is to encourage the studios to release more original movies, but they already know that. they're not dumb, they know that people want original movies. they're basically thriving off of ragebait right now, because ruining a beloved classic is the best way to get people talking. coming up with an original idea would require them to actually pay their employees and give their writers the creative freedom to come up with something new.

“Merida basically wished her mother was dead.” What in the fuck are you talking about? Tell me you didn’t watch Brave without telling me you didn’t watch Brave. Why is it that Merida is always dragged into conversations like these (the post this person is replying to was about how apparently some people are upset at Pixar for “glamorizing disobeying your parents” with Turning Red yet Disney heroines have done the exact same thing and they were praised for it) when in reality she had every right to disobey her mother, whom was forcing her to do something she did not want to do and refusing to allow her to have any say in what she wanted to do with her own life, prioritized the needs of an entire kingdom and three grown ass men over her own daughter, and went as far as to burn something precious to Merida if it meant molding her into the perfect princess she wanted her to be. Oh, and the best part, her mother never apologized for any of it. This is exactly what I’m talking about when I say the general public, most of which have never even watched Brave, victimizes Elinor and villainizes Merida to the point where Merida’s so disgustingly mischaracterized and it infuriates me to no end. Keep Merida’s name out of your mouth.
