Description: The brothers weren’t both left behind.
Spoilers: For Azran Legacy
Set: AU. Set during that one flashback to Layton’s childhood in AL
Warnings: Major warning for canon character death and gore. Indistinct gore, but still. I don’t think it’s anything worse than what’s seen in The Hunger Games but still
Inspiration: Written for prompt 7 of PL-tober: Haunted House
The red-roofed house is silent as Raymond trudges towards it.
He has only been gone a week, visiting family, but something feels very wrong.
His neighbours, the Bronevs, prefer to keep to themselves, but they’ve always been kind to Raymond and they promised to feed Raymond’s pet cat.
When he returned home, Grace’s bowl had been empty, her packets of food unopened. Thankfully, Grace had gotten out through a window and has been living off field mice.
She had run off when Raymond tried to call her in, though. (Much like her namesake!)
Had something spooked her…?
The pit in Raymond’s stomach deepens as he creeps towards the front door, which has been left open by a crack.
“Hallo?” Raymond hollers. “Leon? Rachel…?”
He’s about to knock on the door, when he smells it. After years spent studying medicine, it’s unmistakable.
Raymond clamps a hand over his mouth and nose.
He hovers on the threshold of the house— the home of a hardworking father who enjoys board games and a sweet mother who always sends birthday cards and two young boys (too young) who hunt for treasure in the garden…
Nothing, in all the world, can prepare Raymond for this. Whatever awaits him inside will haunt him for the rest of his life.
He wants to flee, like Grace. He wants to call the police and hide while someone else cleans up the mess.
He doesn’t want to see his neighbours— His friends?— dead…
Then he pictures ten-year-old Hershel, fixing Raymond’s broken lawnmower, with five-year-old Theodore trying to help.
Raymond takes a deep breath, closes his eyes and grips the doorknob. Edges the door open. Steps inside. Steps in something…
The metallic reek makes his eyes water. He forces them open even as his vision distorts from the floorboards. And the rug…
Two bodies lie on the rug. The larger one is curled on its side— around the smaller—
Raymond lets out a strangled sob. He stumbles out of the door and discards the contents of his stomach.
He freezes when he hears a tiny voice behind him. “Help…”
Gripping his hair, Raymond shakes his head. It can’t be. He must be imagining—
“P-please, help us,” the voice calls weakly. “My brother— Hershel— needs help…“
Raymond bursts back into the house. He falls to his knees when he sees the seven-year-old sitting up beside his brother’s body.
“Mr. Raymond!” Theodore Bronev shouts. He shakes his brother’s shoulder. “Hershel! Hershel, wake up! Raymond is here! He’s here to help us…!”
Raymond drags himself to Theodore’s side, gazing into those wide dark eyes— anywhere but the rug.
Frantically, Theodore glances from his brother to Raymond. Theodore breathes, “H-Hershel—?”
“I’m so sorry,” Raymond splutters. Theodore starts to cry.
Raymond scoops up the boy and staggers out of the house, leaving the other behind.
Me maybe getting 👀👀👀 about the concept of pain-lines scarring
It’s subtle when it first starts.
Scott’s just taken pain from a newly-orphaned werewolf—they got to the pack a miserable five minutes too late—when Stiles passes by. He stops long enough for a silent question about the survivors, and it takes a full ten seconds for the black lines to fade entirely from his skin.
Stiles doesn’t think anything of it.
A month later, locked in a safehouse in downtown Manhattan, he very, very much wishes he had.

I wanted to share this awesome AU fic where Hershel perishes in the time machine explosion instead of Claire. Claire and Dimitri then team up to take on what would have been Hershel’s adventures during the first three games. Featuring a BAMF Claire, poor unfortunate Dimitri, Phantom Detective Hershel, his ghost apprentice Clive, Flora getting adopted by Claire, and Don Paolo being a total simp for Claire.
And maybe, just maybe, Bill Hawks getting his comeuppance...
