The Peasant Blouse from the 1940s
As it has now turned to summer up north, I thought I would feature of the summer looks that has been showing when the weather is hit since the last century when the weather turned hot: the peasant blouse, often worn with the tiered and gathered skirt, but not always. Butterick’s version of the peasant blouse has some traditional features plus some 1940s touches. It has the drawstring neckline and gathers to finish off the sleeves which is reminiscent of traditional. There are short sleeves with ties and fuller 3/4th sleeves that end in elasticized cuffs.
This one also has a much higher neckline on one version and finishes that high neckline with eyelet trim as an option, making it possible to wear under a summer suit. The 1940s comes out again in the small shoulder pads that are called for, and in the trim waist with pleats (see the back sketch in the lower right) to make it easier to tuck inside a skirt. It might be worn with trousers too, but only for play wear during vacation. So a refined take on peasant wear from mid-century.
Notice that a 36″ bust is called a size 18 (see top right) when today a 36″ bust can be anything from a10 in ready-to-wear to a size 14 in sewing patterns. Why not just call it a 36″ bust and simplify life? Because so many of us like to brag about some tiny size number we can wear instead. The sizing madness drove some of the Dress Doctors crazy even back then.

Hidden Figures: Early 1960s Work and Play Wear
Hidden Figures is a wonderful movie, the story of three black women who figured out how to make their way as professional mathematicians at NASA despite racist and sexist stupidity on the part of the powers that be. The movie depicts them at both work and play at a time when both formal and informal clothing still had the kind of details and style that marked everything anyone wore if they could. In short, it is a fashion show too. I daresay stiletto heels were not quite as common on women working in offices back then as costume designer Taraji P. Henson makes them out to be, but we know few in Hollywood are able to resist those pointy things as a sign of the times.
