A murder mystery film set in a medieval village. After an outbreak of plague, the villagers make the decision to shut their borders so as to protect the disease from spreading (see the real life case of the village of Eyam). As the disease decimates the population, however, some bodies start showing up that very obviously were not killed by plague.
Since nobody has been in or out since the outbreak began, the killer has to be somebody in the local community.
The village constable (who is essentially just Some Guy, because being a medieval constable was a bit like getting jury duty, if jury duty gave you the power to arrest people) struggles to investigate the crime without exposing himself to the disease, and to maintain order as the plague-stricken villagers begin to turn on each other.
The killer strikes repeatedly, seemingly taking advantage of the empty streets and forced isolation to strike without witnesses. As with any other murder mystery, the audience is given exactly the same information to solve the crime as the detective.
Except, that is, whenever another character is killed, at which point we cut to the present day where said character's remains are being carefully examined by a team of modern archaeologists and historians who are also trying to figure out why so many of the people in this plague-pit died from blunt force trauma.
The archaeologists and historians, btw, are real experts who haven't been allowed to read the script. The filmmakers just give them a model of the victim's remains, along with some artefacts, and they have to treat it like a real case and give their real opinion on how they think this person died.
We then cut back to the past, where the constable is trying to do the same thing. Unlike the archaeologists, he doesn't have the advantage of modern tech and medical knowledge to examine the body, but he does have a more complete crime scene (since certain clues obviously wouldn't survive to be dug up in the modern day) and personal knowledge from having probably known the victim.
The audience then gets a more complete picture than either group, and an insight into both the strengths and limits of modern archaeology, explaining what we can and can't learn from studying a person's remains.
At the end of the film, after the killer is revealed and the main plot is resolved, we then get to see the archaeologists get shown the actual scenes where their 'victims' were killed, so they can see how well their conclusions match up with what 'really' happened.
AU where after his second banishment, every time Xie Lian is injured bad enough to be near death, or dying a hallucination of Wu Ming appears to comfort him. Xie Lian learns very quickly not to touch this Wu Ming, because he vanishes if touched.
One day Xie Lian is attacked by a strange creature that has paralyzing venom, and is able to break off and eat Xie Lian's curse shackles gravely injuring Xie Lian in the process. He is comforted by Wu Ming being there even knowing he really might not survive this time. Only not long after another Wu Ming appears. This one looks different, but he's undeniably Wu Ming, kills the creature and while being clearly distressed immediately begins tending to Xie Lian, touching him, and making Xie Lian realize this new Wu Ming is definitely real.
"New Wu Ming" abandons the creature's body, which leads to someone from the heavens finding it, and after the heavenly court investigates they find the ingested curse shackles, and come to the conclusion Xie Lian is dead.
Xie Lian completely unaware of any of this is the most happy he's been in centuries as he recovered under the care of Hua Cheng, and gets to learn all about what his Wu Ming has being doing while they were separated.
Cue absolute chaos when Xie Lian's third ascension happens.
Instead of Soulmarks, it's bruises and scars that show up on the partner.
Steve Harrington had a pretty easy childhood, the occasional bruise here and there from his sports but then one day he wakes up black and blue. The marks don't hurt. His soulmate must be very daring or clumsy.
Over time it becomes apparent that the bruises only ever show up where they aren't visible every day, on his back, his chest. Never on his face.
It stops for a while.
Steve has his brawl with Jonathan and suddenly the next day he is covered in bruises again. It's strange to say the least.
In fall Billy Hargrove joins their classes, looking far too put together and clean for someone who keeps antagonising everyone.
The brawl at the Byers house happens.
A few days later at school Steve gets a look at Billy, and it's like looking in a mirror.

AN: I have this idea and I don't want it to die in my plotbunny graveyard. More cake and all that. I need this story 😭
As someone who does not speak English as their first language, I often encounter a problem when writing: how to describe certain activities.
This is because translations do not always convey the meaning I want to express. That is why I have been working on a mini dictionary for some time now.
The list will be updated as soon as I manage to create another category or encounter another problem.
Below you will find:

It may contain mistakes, I'm not a genius at English, I may have messed something up.
I have also started a new batch with prompts, i.e., what to do when I run out of words and need new, alternative phrases that better convey the meaning. Divided into categories for convenience (solo posts). It will be updated on an ongoing basis:

This category will be slightly different, but equally necessary. These are verbal reactions during speech without interrupting the dialogue to add narration. This makes it easier to imagine how a particular statement sounded without constantly inserting reactions into the narration. Below, I have created some categories, emotional tones, and rhythmic nuances (how length, repetition, and punctuation change the sound or meaning).
1. Light / Breathless / Startled
Used when a character is surprised, breathless, flustered, or reacting to sudden touch or emotion.
ah - soft, startled - brief intake of breath — surprise, slight pain, or pleasure
e.g.: “It’s not— ah— like that.”
oh - airy, emotional - softer than ah; often linked to realization or wonder“
e.g.: Oh... I didn’t expect you here.”
hah - breathy, amused - mixes air and sound — half-laugh, half-exhale
e.g.: “Don’t— hah— tease me.”
uh - uncertain, hesitant - filler of hesitation or confusion
e.g.: “I— uh— didn’t mean to.”
hm / hmm - thoughtful, restrained - often shows mild agreement or suppressed emotion
e.g.: “Hmm... you really think so?”
mm - muffled, through closed lips - gentle hum of satisfaction, sometimes sensual
e.g.: “Mm... maybe.”
Rhythmic note:
Short = spontaneous (reaction).
Repeated (hah, hah) = panting or breathless.
Ellipsis (...) = hesitation or soft trailing off.
2. Heated / Sensual / Restrained
Used for NSFW or high-tension moments when speech and breath collide — words interrupted by physical reaction, desire, or restraint.
ahh - open, releasing soft - breathy exhale of pleasure or relief
E.g.: “Ahh— right there.”
hahh - shaky, forced heavier breathing - tense control or arousal
E.g.: “Don’t— hahh— stop.”
mmh / mnh - muffled, closed-mouth -subdued moan or breath through resistance
e.g.: “Mmh... you’re impossible.”
ngh - guttural, restrained sound caught in the throat — effort or stifled pleasure
e.g.: “Ngh— wait.”
hnn -internalized, tense - tight, barely audible; often signals control
e.g.: “Hnn— you think I’ll break?”
aah - open, vulnerable louder or less controlled sound — surrender or high emotion
e.g.: “Aah— please—”
A “Back to the Past” AU where Chloe was sent back to the moment she opened the bee miraculous, as you’ve said before, would vary wildly from canon. Chloe would hide and be a lot more careful. Hawkmoth would stay in retirement until Feast in all likelihood.
I do wonder how she would handle heroes day, as her thoughts would most certainly be elsewhere. I wager when she’d be asked what her good deed is for heroes day, she’d probably be delayed in response before blurting out something like “I’ll be helping Jean (insert name here) around the hotel today” as a retort to Marinette scoffing that she has nothing planned (if I remember the episode correctly).
This world would be fun to look over, as Chloe is often a catalyst. After Feast, Ikari Gozen seems to be the most reasonable akuma to be next in the timeline. Though they’ll likely defeat the akuma a different way considering Ladybug would be FAR less willing to give out a miraculous, even temporarily. Timetagger might not even exist. Miracle Queen would never happen as Chloe is a lot less vulnerable than she was originally. If we’re looking at a far flung future out to season 4’s timeframe then Lukanette and Adrigami would never split, that is if Chat Blanc is overall unaltered by the time Gabriel would have spent with Adrian in the time between him coming in and out of retirement.
I wager that Gabriel would take a less manipulative “ephemeral” approach and just lay it all out for Adrian once he knows he’s Chat Noir, his desire for his wife to return and obligations to the kingdom conflicting with the new bond with his son that he wants to sustain. I honestly think it’s the best scenario for a peaceful resolution where Adrian and Gabriel hash out his desire for his wife to return, as Gabriel has learned to live more in the present, and to cherish the family he has left far more than canon Gabriel does. He has a good chance of just giving up the butterfly and peacock once Adrian says he doesn’t share that same desire he does and is willing to move on. Heck, Felix (the episode) might be a great prelude to this conclusion for Gabriel with Adrian’s suggestion of him and Nathalie becoming close.
For an AU centered around Chloe originally it has such massive ripple effects for all characters that hypothetically it can lead to the happiest outcome for a good while. Gabriel resigns from the Kingdom, with Tomoe needing to pick up the slack. I think Gabriel and Tomoe would collaborate on the alliance still, just with Gabriel out of the loop on its greater strategic purpose. Noe appears a lot earlier than scheduled and appears at the diamond ball, now hosted by Andre and Audrey.
Once we get more information on the kingdom you could write a more detailed fanfic with the fallout of both the kingdom and the order of the miraculous clashing over the miraculous, minus the Bee of course. I don’t think Chloe would get the opportunity to use the Bee for the most part, and she’d probably have pride in just having it over using it after a while. Having it is a win, isn’t it? It’s better than when she got it originally.
There’s full rolodex of questions to be asked considering the expansions seen in season 6 and everything before that.
Would Gabriel and Nathalie marry at some point?
Would they invite Amelie and Felix? I don’t think the rest of her family would bother to come.
How would Felix change? The peacock isn’t where he thinks it is anymore.
Fu is still the guardian in this timeline, and even by the time the guardians are revived Fu has all of the miraculous but one, the Bee. How would the guardians handle Fu?
Andre is a lot more interesting to explore here as his wife is more involved in the plot at the same time his life has become more turbulent with her other children seemingly coming out of nowhere. It would FINALLY be a good time to discuss that whole clusterfuck.
I wonder how Gabriel will handle his and Tomoe’s deal IF Adrinette has set sail and stays together long enough.
I wonder how Zoe would feel about her distant and cold half sister and open but suspicious half brother in this timeline.
Sorry if this was all a bit much. It’s just that when you start to imagine emergent possibilities from one change it can be hard to stop asking questions with a canon so far removed from the point in time being returned to.
Sorry I didn't read everything but I agree with you. I love canon divergent fics. I have several that look at 'what if one thing had happened differently?' You can shift mountains with a single act.
all the perpollo fic recs have percy travelling to the ancient past, but i wonder at flipping the script and having an ancient apollo travelling to the future and being disoriented at the shift in the balance and power
