And dazai gets so mad, like how dare mori try take them away from him.

⌯⌲ oh~ i have written this exact scenario & let’s just say it didn’t end well for those involved ૮⸝⸝๑﹏๑⸝⸝ა au where he’s older as an executive.
Being Dazai’s underling isn’t bad, you’re often confused why people complain about having to report to him. Aside from showering you with immense praise or maybe following you around to talk your ear off when he has nothing else to do, he leaves you be to tend to your duties. He even smiles more when you’re around, making him rather pleasant, and he is a great conversationalist.
You have heard the onslaught of rumors though that you see a “different side” of the mafia executive simply because you’re his favorite. In all honesty, you don’t know what you’ve done to earn his rare satisfaction, but you’re not going to dare complain. You’re well aware he is ruthless, can be cruel and hateful toward others; you don’t want to be on the receiving end of that. Plus, you kind of enjoy his company when he has time to spare — he makes you laugh with his silly and dry humor; he tells you how sweet your giggles are; he even stands a little closer to you on the elevator when no one else is around to continue speaking to you. He makes you blush and flustered, on top of all the kind words he grants you; you’re willing to be selfish for once and accept the favoritism. It’s already extremely difficult being in the mafia, his unwavering attention is a treat to help get you through.
Sometimes, Dazai will even use you as a prime example of an “exceptional” mafia member, putting you on a high pedestal while continuously singing positive compliment after compliment on how well you do in the organization. Little did either of you know that would be the downfall.
“Hey, do you have a minute?” He gently knocks his knuckles on the doorframe, peering at you from over your computer screen. Your head jerks up, eyes catching his — he looks calm and steady as usual, aside from a slightly downward twitch to his lips. “Boss wants to speak with us.” Your brows come together momentarily before finishing your work to save for later, then get to your feet to reach his side. His hands are now in his pockets as he guides you along the polished hallway toward Mori’s office.
“Did he say what for?” Your hands fold themselves in front of you, glancing up to the side of his face, seeing he is wearing a more stoic expression this time before suddenly the corner of his mouth tugs up.
“Probably to tell you to keep up your outstanding work, and then tell me I’m doing a fantastic job at being a superior since we have such a good worker,” he compliments, sparing you a glance with his one eye visible. You can’t stop the slight flush rushing to your cheeks as your eyes playfully roll, wearing a sheepish smile to try dismissing him.
“I highly doubt that, but thank you as always, Mr. Dazai. You have no idea how much your compliments mean to me,” you bow your head some, to show your respect, then stop by the door, gesturing him to go ahead of you — only for his bandaged hand to open it. Waiting for you. Such a gentleman, you inwardly swoon, stepping in and cautiously stepping toward Mori’s desk, Dazai’s heavy footsteps following close behind.
“Ah, there you two are,” Mori greets, setting his pen down and throwing a leg over the other. “Dazai dear, how is my favorite executive?” The one in question bites back a grimace, forming a tight, curt smile instead, and nods his head.
“Miserable as always, Mori, thank you for asking.”
“Good to hear!” The boss cheers, wearing his usual grin that could make anyone’s skin crawl. God, I hate you. Your gaze flits between them, keeping your mouth closed, and waiting politely and patiently with your feet close together. “I have been reevaluating workflow, as well as reviewing all the glowing reviews you and your other fellow executives have been putting in for their respective workers. And I must say, I have never seen such high quality work and praise from someone you are overseeing.” You feel a small sense of pride, that maybe Dazai was right in the hallway about this essentially just being a meeting to discuss how great you’re doing. However, your face drops when you glance back to your superior to see he is stone cold as he stares ahead, jaw clenching, and the vein in his neck is actually protruding from under his bandages.
“What do you mean by ‘reevaluating workflow’?” He asks, voice a bit low, barely getting it out from behind his teeth.
“Well, what I mean is the other executives have been complaining that they don’t have such disciplined subordinates that accurately, precisely, and efficiently complete their work. Not at least in the manner of yours,” a hand fans out vaguely in the room, somewhat gesturing to you, and a small pit of doom drops in your stomach that can only be delivered by the Port Mafia boss himself.
“Sucks for them,” he murmurs, his hands forming tight fists in his pockets. “Not sure what that has to do with us.”
“It has everything to do with you two since I will be reassigning them to another executive,” Mori states simply, leaning back in his chair with his hands folded atop his knee. “Nakahara specifically seems to be struggling, and I think such a great subordinate like this would do some good to get efficiency back into his ranks.” You stand there in silence still, stunned, because originally no one wanted you when you showed up. Not even Dazai — he only came around to you in the past year, and you don’t exactly know what you’ve done. Now, you’re being taken away from pretty much the only higher up that not only tolerates you but actually likes you.
“Over my dead body,” Dazai retorts, remaining shockingly calm, despite his teeth audibly grinding in his mouth.
“I can have that arranged,” Mori counters, his airy chuckle following, seemingly enjoying this as if it’s all a game to him.
“Mr. Mori, I like working for Mr. Dazai,” you decide to interject, but you’re timid. You rarely speak out of turn when in his presence, but you aren’t sure you can stand by and allow this to happen. You obviously have nothing against Chuuya, you just know he isn’t quite that fond of you — he refers to you often as “Dazai’s pet”. It rubs you the wrong way, but you can’t fault him for it when he’s… kind of right. “If it’s possible, I would really prefer to stay as his subordinate instead since I like the work I do for him. While Mr. Nakahara is a great superior as well, I’m not really onboard with the duties he has for his underlings.” Mori listens, or at least pretends to, allowing you permission to state your case, but he merely stares at you. His fingers come up absentmindedly to mess with his red scarf, pursing his lips, appearing to be in deep thought.
Dazai continues to stand there, back straight, head raised, and holding back his growing rage. There genuinely is no reason for you to be reassigned. His mind is reeling with reasons as to why Mori would be doing this, but he can’t come up with anything. You two haven’t strayed off from your duties, he is still his usual self: kind of late but still present and offering his best strategies to further improve the mafia’s financial gain while maintaining the number one organization in Yokohama. The Armed Detective Agency has been kept at bay without their need to go snooping around into what the mafia does, primarily thanks to you since you’re good at covering everyone’s tracks. Is this just to mess with me?
His thoughts are flooded right now with all this information, but there is one thing that sticks out the most: you said you like working with him. In the eight grueling and miserable, depressing years he’s been there, not once has a single person uttered the phrase “I like working under Dazai” until you came along. He isn’t sure if he can believe that, if he’s allowed for that weird, warming sensation to bloom in his otherwise cold chest at hearing how pleased you are with him being your superior. His eye dares to glance at you sidelong, an unfortunate giveaway to the boss that he may have won whatever battle he is ensuing, but Dazai doesn’t care right now.
“Will I receive them back once Chuuya’s team gets their shit together?” He asks, point blank. The boss' eyes roll upward, gazing at the ceiling, still pretending to be thinking, before clicking his tongue.
"Haven't decided," he smiles again, looking at Dazai only, and that infuriates him more.
"Surely I have a say in this, since they report to me," he argues, and you're so intensely flattered by him trying to fight so hard to keep you amongst his ranks. "I can't afford to be without them on my end of things. Either I am to get them back once Chuuya's business is repaired or they don't go at all. It's as simple as that, Mori." The mafia leader continues wearing that sickening grin, eyeing his top executive from where he sits, head cocking, then chuckles under his breath.
"It's funny you think you have a say in any decisions I make, Dazai dear," his foot drops to the marble floor, almost as if banging the gavel, and a loud slap! hits his desk surface. You jump slightly, seeing his stamp signature in his fingers, and he doesn't bother giving you any other attention. "Alright, dear, you are reporting to Nakahara effective immediately. Take your reassignment paperwork straight to him and accept whatever orders he has until I see an uptick in his sector's work ethic." One arm is extended out with the single sheet of paper in his hand, pen in the other, busying himself already. Quick to dismiss you both.
Dazai glowers, watching as you shuffle over to take the sheet, eyes rapidly scanning over it, thinking somewhere it says "permanent" in the paragraph. Once the paper is relinquished from his hand, Mori shoos you both away without raising his head. You follow Dazai, whose steps have grown in stride that you can't keep up with, and don't really have much to say.
"Did you mean it when you said you like working with me?" He suddenly asks when you two approach the elevator, voice in a low whisper, nearly sounding defeated. You blink a few times, the doors sliding open for you to step in, and his fist smashes the button that leads to the roof. Why would we go there?
"Yeah, of course," you say that like it should be obvious. He sits with that for a long moment, his reflection staring back at him: his usual cold, gray skin appears to have some color to it, and his eye doesn't look nearly as lifeless as he was used to. He can theorize what is causing these changes, but it's easier to ignore it and channel all of his thoughts into a scheme.
"Alright then," he stares straight ahead, arms at his sides, and takes a deep inhale. Acting like a decision has just been made. "You'll have to grin and bear it while I come up with a plan to get you reassigned back to me." He tells you on the exhale, clear he is doing what he can to keep his cool, but you know he's bothered by this. You know you're his favorite for whatever reason he has come up with on his own; you know he absolutely loathes Chuuya; and you know he was blindsided by this as much as you were. Neither of you like Mori much, sharing quiet conversations in private about your common grievances, but you never dared to make that known or public to anyone but Dazai, confident he wouldn't tell anyone else. You do worry maybe someone overheard — maybe the topic of conversation himself caught wind of it, and this is your punishment.
It isn't necessarily a secret you two are close from the blatant favoritism, but it never seemed to bother anyone or get in the way of anything. Work got done, money was made, traitors and enemies were disposed of, no evidence left behind, and meetings regarding whatever negotiations have gone smoothly. It very well could just be Mori is bored and wanting to further upset Dazai — something you've come to learn is his favorite pastime, which bothers you to no end, because when Dazai's upset, he takes it out on anyone that dares to get in his way. That's when he goes to you, anger visible in his brow, but all he does is ask you to ditch work with him for a little while until he feels better.
You like those moments, and now they're being taken away right out from under you.
"Alright, I trust you, Mr. Dazai. I'll be waiting."
