Mystery didn’t feel anything.
Well, that couldn’t have been true. He knew that the others felt things too—Mystery just felt things different. Pain, misery, hate…all of those things were so easy for, say, Jinu…but Mystery hadn’t ever had the sick counterparts to those emotions. Love. Yearning. It’s near impossible to yearn for something you’ve never had access to.
But then this hunter came along, and in one fell swoop gave this demon access to all of it. And it was hell! Suddenly, it wasn’t enough to be touched; now he wanted to be touched again. It wasn’t enough to be seen; he wanted to be understood. A single compliment, tossed so thoughtlessly, made his insides clench with wanting. A kindness could peel him raw! Emotions were not gifts—they were gluttonous things that clawed at him once the door was so much as cracked.
It was enough to drive the demon off a cliff! But he couldn’t—then there would be no more compliments to get. He couldn’t stop the pain, because then there could be no more healing.
Only silence, just like for the last few centuries.
So instead, at the sound of her praise, he reached up…and let sharp nails graze her cheek as he studied her in silence…only to offer a slight smile in return.

OK so like . i actually subscribe to this one . don't get me wrong i do think nod struggles with things ( like the loss of his father ) , but i don't really think he's the kind of guy who internalizes his trauma . he CAN dream , but he's not a " wake up in a cold sweat " kind of guy . i genuinely think that so much of the trauma he's experienced is just . part of his life and the culture of those around him so it just Doesn't Bug Him ( pun intented ) . so yeah long story short when people wake up from bad dreams and are like " yeah just one of those nightmares " he's like " MHMM ... HAHA I SURE DO GET THOSE ... "
