As usual during hiatus, I fill my need for Flash episodes by watching the French dub of the previous season, and talking about it.

If you want all the details, you can find the link to all my previous posts in the sidebar, but to recap quickly, you can expect funny mistranslations, translations that completely contradict the original version, me bitching about how the voice for X character is wrong (especially the speesters' voices, oh god), and the translator shipping everyone with everyone.

There shouldn't be any particular difficulties for this season, unlike for the current one, where I don't know how they're going to handle Sherloque… I just hope the voice actor who dubs Devoe can do a smarmy voice.

But anyway, let's dive in!

The title of Episode 1, The Flash Reborn, was translated as "Cours, Barry, cours" (Run, Barry, run).

When Cisco describes what the samurai did with his sword in the first episode, when he created a shock wave that blew them backwards, instead of saying "blew us away like rag dolls, performing his reverse Excalibur", he says "se la jouer Autant En Emporte le Vent en perforant le bitume avec Excalibur", meaning "he went all Gone with the Wind while piercing the asphalt with Excalibur".

When Barry just got out of the Speed Force and rambles on, repeating old bit of dialogue, and future ones, the sentence "You said the city was safe, that there was no residual damage", which is form the very first episode, is not translated properly. Since Barry was talking to Wellsobard at the time, he used the formal "you", but here he uses "tu" instead, the informal you. That's just bad continuity.

Gypsy describing Cisco as "cute" got an unusual translation. Instead of going with "mignon", which would be the standard translation, the translator chose "croquignolet". Besides being a fun word to pronounce, it adds a layer to the "cute" meaning, because it also implies that the thing is funny/whimsical. It works for Cisco!

The line "A cat burglar litterally burgled her cat" about Becky had to be changed, because it wouldn't work in French, so instead it's "Un coupe-jarret lui a littéralement coupé le jarret", meaning "someone who slashes the back of the knee of people (an expression meaning thief) litterally slashed the back of her knee". Ouch.

The translator who ships all the ships is back... and they changed a "Thank you" from Barry to Cisco in a "Je t'adore", meaning "I love you", not necessarily in a romantic way, but it can be.

When Cisco is showing Star Labs to Gypsy's father, and is kind of stuck with him, his "I've had to pee for three hours" was changed "I've been wanting to die for three hours".

Harry calling Cisco "buttercup" during Barry's bachelor party becomes "mon lapin" (my bunny). It's still a term of endearment, but it feels less tongue-in-cheek in French.
