Classic Who drabble for the current @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt. Sorry, Steven. Not sure what adventure this is an epilogue to, but whatever it was, I doubt it was pleasant.

could’ve been worse

“Well,” the Doctor remarked, infuriatingly cheerful, “that all turned out rather well, I must say. It certainly could have been worse.”

Steven took a deep breath, resisting the urge to bawl. He ached all over, he had an abundance of new nightmare fuel, and he’d been nearly certain they were both dead several times over.

The Doctor’s definition of rather well could be rather horrifying, sometimes.

Still, Steven supposed, for once he hadn’t had any friends murdered. So the Doctor had a point.

“Right,” Steven said eventually, rubbing his eyes. “Could’ve been worse. I’m sure it will be, next time.”
