Fai settled down on the overstuffed couch and pressed the phone to his ear and pulled his laptop out with his free hand. Seishiro answered almost immediately which was never a good sign. 

“Well well. Look who did not choke on his own vomit.” Seishiro sounded far to cheery for the massive headache Fai was rocking and he held the phone a few inches from his ear and sighed. “Glad to see that your big bad police boyfriend saw you home safely. He has quite a glare you know.” 

“He’s taken care of.” Fai started typing in his password and wedged the phone between his shoulder and cheek to make use of both of his hands. 

“I’m glad you came to your senses. Did you need Fuuma to grab the clean up team again?” Seishiro’s question confused Fai and his fingers froze for a moment, brows furrowing. 

“Excuse me?” had he misheard that? There was a few seconds of silence and he heard Seishiro sigh. 

“You didn’t really take care of him did you?” 

Oh. OH.

Fai didn’t know how he managed to laugh when he was this hungover but sometimes he could not believe the things that came out of Seishiro’s mouth. No he had not ‘taken care of him.’ 

“What am I a black widow?”

It’s official, the light novel is making me cry.

Subaru can be a little hard to handle as a character sometimes, and I understand that. I still adored his relentless determination, but people were allowed to complain because I kinda understood he could rub a little.

But now I WILL DEFEND MY POOR IDIOT CHILD. HE JUST WANTS TO BE APPRECIATED AND VALIDATED BUT HE HAS A BAD ROLE MODEL AND NO SOCIAL SKILLS AND TERRIBLE SELF ESTEEM

Bonus points for also hitting that ‘early overachiever finds they aren’t something special and crash and burn later in life’ feel.
