so many of hospital earth's decisions suddenly make sense once you realize that their goal isn't to make the lives of earth citizens easier, but to make it so that as many babies with immune syndrome as possible are raised as wards of hospital earth. Because the more wards they have, the more funding they likely get from parliament of planets

Now that earth is finally going to be represented in parliament of planets and hospital earth is no longer going to be a dictatorship making uncontested governing decisions for them, i imagine one of the first laws that's going to change is the one stating that only the parents of babies with immune syndrome can be their guardians. Because you KNOW there has be a bunch of aunties and uncles and grandparents who wanted desperately to care for their nibling/grandchild who was abandoned by the parents.

Hell, jarra herself would likely have been taken in by riak when marack and gemena couldn't step in to claim custody of her.

I keep wondering what the second roman empire was like for the Betan military clans. If I could pick a random time period from the Portal Future and request a short story from Janet Edwards, I think it would be that. We get glimpses of how the Military feel about it in Earth Flight, but rereading the descriptions of it in Earth Girl makes me question. The summary Ventrak Rostha gives of events treats the military as completely seperate from beta. All military personnel had to leave. Military Personnel could stay on the solar arrays for five years to train replacements. That seems to imply either that none of the staff of the solar arrays were Betan, or that even Betan military personnel were asked to leave.

What was it like for the Military Clans then? Was Beta Sector only able to declare a Second Roman Empire because they had the help of the Military clan alliance, or did they force those people out of Beta sector?

It feels like the Tell clan is too important and powerful to have been forced out, but I can't remember when the Chimera happened. Whether it was before or after the second roman empire. I need tu check. And then maybe write Fanfiction.

lowkey I can’t get over how jarra hating psychologists is played as a joke for the majority of the series even though it’s because as a kid she took part in (at least one) psychological experiment that was bad enough to give her friend a legitimate phobia

should i read hive mind? i'm so attached to earth girl that deviating to the other series seems like a betrayal. but give it straight to me and tell me whether i should get over this hangover of mine and start reading them.

I would really like to see Crozier’s perspective on Jarra becoming famous (and on her coming back to him for camping equipment in Earth Flight). I think it would be really interesting to see that for people Jarra knew in general (Valeska in particular as well) but especially Crozier. Like, I’m pretty sure he was a big part of the reason Jarra loves history so much, in contrast to her science teacher being the main reason she hates science.

And yes, I am thinking about this partly because we got a new part of Earth and Water today.

commander tell morrath is not even close to being "basically a norm".

you do realize that she had to go through a life-threatening surgery to be able to survive on other planets, right?

and you do know that if her surgically implanted web were ever malfunction or be irreparably damaged, she'd die, right?

that's not something that norms have to go through.

and not just that, even though she can travel to other planets now, that doesn't erase an entire childhood of growing up handicapped. it doesn't erase all the trauma and ridicule that she went through, same as you and me.

just because she ended up lucky enough to have a family that wants her doesn't erase the fact that she grew up feeling alone and unloved. it doesn't change the fact that some bigoted zeus sewer rat decided to throw skunk juice at her just for the way she was born.

the nuking exos who are prejudiced against us are still going to find things to hate about her, even if she CAN travel to other star systems now. because their hatred was never actually about that.

so stop doing their jobs for them by trying to tear her down.

at the end of the day, commander tell morrath has way more in common with us apes than she does with those exos, and that's never going to change.
