Yesterday, while cleaning out the old house garage, I picked up a deflated balloon. One of those big helium-filled bastards, you know the sort—all crinkly and round. This one, when I picked it up, had a slit in the side.

And was weirdly soft and heavy.

This, I processed as I was dropping it in the trash, and it made me uneasy. Did I just touch something without meaning to? Did I just throw out a dead rat lurking in a balloon? We poked the bundle of balloon—now in the garbage can—a few times to reassure ourselves it wasn’t alive. It didn’t move. We moved on.

Today, I get this from my wife:

A POSSUM. I THREW OUT A LIVING POSSUM.

THIS POOR BABY.

I am now getting a running commentary as my wife frees this furball from the trash can. And watches it go back in. And scoops it back out again.

Possum is now free and clear safely behind the garage. Wife is so proud. I am losing it.

Alastair’s Pets & Familiar

*Note: Just…role with all of them being domesticated and safe, along with being native to Lunaruz. Alastair would never take foreign animals*

Pooh the Rescue Fox

(Reference Photo is Finnegan from Save A Fox. Please consider researching them and donating to them <3) Alastair found Pooh in his family’s yard as a kit, a runt abandoned by her mother, and took her into the house (much to his elder sister’s dismay and his twin’s delight). Calling a local vet, Alastair ended up learning how to care for the newborn kit, but learned that Pooh wouldn’t be able to go into the wild once older since she’d imprinted on Alastair. She’s very playful and affectionate, along with protective of the little ones in Alastair’s life.

Oranges the Rescue Possum

After saving and adopting Pooh the fox, Alastair began learning about animal rescue and rehabilitation. Again, he came across an abandoned baby animal — this time a baby possum — and nursed it to health, but the baby imprinted on him like Pooh had and now lives with Alastair. She loves orange slices, thus her name. Pooh sees Oranges as her own baby, and protects Oranges like her own kit.

Justinian the Senior Rescue Dog

When in college, Alastair’s ADHD and GAD flared up, but he wasn’t allowed Pooh as his ESA/Service Animal (I’m not sure which she’d count as), so he went to a local shelter and found a Beagle and Bassett Hound mixed breed dog that was about eight years old when Alastair adopted him. Using magic, Alastair healed all of Justinian’s ailments and any wounds he had, along with giving him longevity like he did with Pooh and Oranges. Justinian, or Justin, adores Pooh and Oranges, looking over them like a father figure. He especially guards Oranges due to how small the little one is, and knows Pooh can hold her own. He is also extremely protective of Eleanor, who adores him and spoils him when Alastair lets her.
