Day 2 - A little late...

So I would've been on time today if I hadn't cut a gash in my finger trying to cut an apple 😭. I'm blaming it on the glasses. Otherwise, I was relatively productive. I finally finished the first 2 chapters of Khan Academy's MCAT review, and I just finished my CARS section for today! I also started putting dates into my planner. I'm really trying to be on top of my game this semester and procrastinate as little as possible. The first picture is my outfit today, which my partner says makes me look like Marie Curie (very sweet of him, but I think he just means vibes-wise), and the second is my view from my study spot with my daily puzzle game pulled up. I did lose some study time just endlessly chatting, but I think that's better than scrolling on my phone anyway, even if I did log an hour and 20 minutes of reels time.

Improvement is improvement, no matter where it comes from. I hope I can keep it up...or as my friend from the program tells me to say... I will keep it up (she's trying to get me to use stronger language when talking about myself lol).

After 18 months of the best health of my life, I’ve made the decision to go back to school and work towards earning a medical degree.

It’s an insane endeavor. I’ll be 29 or 30 entering med school all being well, and I won’t be a full fledged attending until I’m 38 at the youngest.

But the time will pass anyway. I may as well spend it fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Nursing is a great career but I want to do more clinical research and become more specialized than nursing allows. I want to be a pulmonologist, and I especially want to focus on fibrotic lung disease and chronic rejection following lung transplantation. It’s an exciting field as there’s so much possibility for new, effective methods using meds we already have.

Right now I’m looking at post baccalaureate programs and teaching myself the topics as much as I can so I can perform well.

Taking a “Gap Year” Before Medical School

In this post, I’ll be discussing the topic above while emphasizing a few things for those who are currently in college, currently taking a gap year, or those who have exceeded the “gap year.” I’ve gotten this information from both MD and DO physicians that I shadowed as well as current medical students who experienced taking a gap year.

For those of you who are currently in college and want to get into medical school... First of all, studying for the MCAT and all of your university courses is very hard. There’s a lot of time management and dedication you have to put into your studies, plus all the experiences that you need to gain (shadowing, research, etc.). So maybe you want to take a gap year focus on the MCAT or work? Taking a gap year could be due to a number of reasons. Just remember, life happens, and that’s completely okay.

The following information will also be very helpful for you.

For those of you who are currently taking a gap year and those who exceeded the gap year...

Why are you taking a year (or more) off? Perhaps it’s because you got rejection letters, you weren’t ready to apply, you were lacking in volunteering/shadowing/research experiences, your MCAT score wasn’t good enough, you want more preparation from a post-bacc program, life happened, or maybe even because you simply was not ready to jump into medical school, etc. Don’t be afraid that medical schools will look at your application and think negatively about your gap year. As long as you show them in your application that you are doing something to improve yourself and your application (like working as a scribe or shadowing and volunteering more). There are a lot of opportunities to shadow or volunteer. All you have to do is reach out to physicians and clinics (if you want to volunteer in a clinic/hospital setting), and they will be happy to take you in.
