Crocodile Incense Burner from Santa Rita, Belize dated between 1500-1540 on display at the World Museum in Liverpool
Some Maya incense burners combined the features of crocodiles with those of other creatures such as fish and deer. Often a god’s head is shown in the creature’s mouth such as you see here. These burners were stuccoed and painted. but only traces of their bright colours remain.
This burner was found in the Maya site of Santa Rita in Belize which was once the Maya city of Chetumal which was believed to have a population of around 6,900.
