Unsung Heroes: Madge Farley
(Portrait of Dame Farley in her youth)
Madge Farley (b. 1897) was a witch born into a Muggle family in Ireland. She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry under Headmaster Quentin Trimble. Madge had an affinity for potions and interest in healing magic. Madge became an apprentice in the school's Hospital Wing. After graduating she became a Healer at St.Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies. She also continued to pursue potioneering. She was inducted as a member of The Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers and traveled extensively through Africa, learning ancient healing arts.
Madge had a “whirlwind” relationship with a Djiboutian alchemist and they had a daughter together.
Belladonna "Bella" Farley was a Keeper for the Ballycastle Bats in the late 1970s, and 80s. She retired from professional quidditch in 1989. Sometime later Madge returned to Britain and married a former head of the Goblin Liaison Office. The couple had a son named Charles "Charlie" Farley. She has two grandchildren through her son. Gemma Farley, Hogwarts Alumni [Slytherin House] and Jake Farley [Ravenclaw house]
During the First Wizarding War Madge became an ally of the Order of the Phoenix, working with her former student and Order member Gideon Prewett who became a talented Healer under her tutelage. She aided in many battles in the First Wizarding War.
In the Second Wizarding War Madge refused to sign-up with the Muggle-Born Registration Commission and her family were listed as Undesirables by the Voldemort controlled ministry. In 1997 her family was reported missing along with her children and grandson Bella, Charlie, and Jake on the Potterwatch radio programme. They were taken to the Forest of Dean by Snatchers. Madge was separated and taken to Ruins while the latter was taken to Quarry. While at the Ruins she secretly treated muggle-born prisoners that had injuries.
Her granddaughter Gemma gathered a rescue party consisting of Penelope Clearwater and Justin Finch-Fletchley and liberated her father, brother, and aunt including several muggle-born prisoners. Madge was rescued by fellow healer Allene Dearborn (nee Warrington) and her son from the Ruins and taken to the safehouse known as the Nobby Leach Hearth. She was reunited her family a week after the Battle of Hogwarts
After the war Madge went to back to St. Mungo’s Hospital as Chief-Healer, revitalizing the Medical Division known as the Medi-Aurors. The Madge Farley Ward (Fifth Floor) was named in her honor. As of 2010 she has retired.
