Having I ever told you about my potato incident?
Of course not, but I have told the story many times. It absolutely haunts me. I feel like during our journey we all have that miracle food that we stumble upon. The one that seems to make calorie heartache a thing of the past. For me it was potatoes.
I know what you're thinking.. "potatoes..?" And your right. I saw an article telling me that they were packed with vitamins and low in fat. The article also said that there were only 77 calories in "medium sized" potatoes and I flipped. A medium sized potato cut into slices makes a decent portion of yum. If I add my nifty little cheese grater trick my snack might as well be chilli cheese fries without the chilli. This sounded like a great low-cal snack.
My first mistake is that eyeballing medium when you're on a diet means that the ball is always going to be your court. My idea of medium is actually pretty generous. I also became very fond of my new friend. Before I knew it I was switching out other low-cal snacks so that I could invite potatoes over again and again.
For nearly a week I was eating around 1000 calories more than I thought I was. Every. Single. Day. Are your eyeballs popping out of your head? Mine did too. For some reason I was feeling a little puffier than before. The only thing new was the potato so I decided to double check on the weight of my portions.
It was a tough lesson to learn. I'm still internally screaming, but I guess it didn't do too much damage before I saw the error of my ways. And potatoes really are packed with vitamins and low in fat. It can lead you to a really healthy snack as long as you're being honest with the portions that you're eating. I highly recommend a kitchen scale for anyone who's starting their journey or wanting to track their progress a little more efficiently. Weighing out your portions might be a bit of a hassle, but it can save you from a nasty calorie shock. They're super cheap at places like Wal-Mart. I don't use mine to weigh out every single thing I eat, but I sure like having it around to put my mind at ease. -Y
