Once again play as if it were supposed to be this way. ~swipe left~ 3) Begin each note with the bottom and add the harmonic on the same bow stroke. Keep the bow speed and weight the same. No phrasing in this step. Focus on clear tone in the harmonics. No need to repeat notes as they appear in the score. ~swipe left~ 4) Now, play harmonics smoothly with the goal of getting from one note to the next clearly. Go back and repeat notes/shifts as necessary to play as smoothly and clearly as possible. No need to phrase or repeat notes in this step. ~swipe left~ 5) Performance version. When #practicingviolin #sautille I remove the middle an pinky fingers from the bow and gently #pronate the hand (rotate inward or counterclockwise from my perspective). I also pull in slightly with the ring finger. This creates the slightly unbalanced bow hand needed for this bow stroke. This is because the preceding 5 measures (122-126) are identical to measures 55-59 transposed to a different key. Here’s a #practicepracticepractice strategy which can clear up the confusion around these two passages. This process may be used in any piece which contains similar passages where the player often takes a “wrong turn” in one or both of the passages. Four videos: 1) Practice only the parts which are the same (many times the passages will be in different keys, but otherwise the same). In this case I’m playing mm 55-59 and 122-127 with pickups back to back. ~swipe left~ 2) Same as step one with the addition of the first note that is different. Play the new, different note longer so it sinks into memory. For more intense and memorable practice, play the new note in different ways — accented, tremolo, significantly louder. ~swipe left~ 3) Continue a few measures into the parts which are different, placing a pause between the music that is the same and the music that’s different. Do something physical during this pause such as turn around, face the opposite direction, or exit the room. ~swipe left~ 4) Performance version. When #practicingviolin repeated #downbow #chords it’s helpful to think of the bow stroke and return quickly to the frog as a single motion, like throwing a ball on the ground and catching it when it rebounds. You need to catch the ball before throwing it again so the down-up motion can be thought of as a single cycle. Similarly, each chord will begin and end at the frog (down-up). Here’s a demonstration of the chords at the end of #violinconcerto in #aminor by J. B. Accolay. Three videos: 1) Throwing a ball against the ground and catching it to experience the motion/cycle of repeated down bow chords. ~swipe left~ 2) Repeat each chord a few times, making sure the bow returns or rebounds quickly back to the string (hair touches the string at the beginning and end of each chord). ~swipe left~ 3) Performance version. Chords are clear and easy. There is no crashing or swatting of the string since I’ve practiced the return as part of each chord. #practicingviolin replacement shifts in #violinconcerto in #aminor by #jbaccolay These shifts are challenging because the #stringplayer must change position while playing the same note. The opening of this #concerto is challenging as it contains two such shifts in the first phrase! Here’s how I practice mm 23-4 and 120-1: Three videos: 1) Shift back and forth slowly. In the piece, these shifts are descending; however it is useful to practice the shifts in both directions. Listen carefully to match the pitch before and after the shift. Make sure the motion is smooth and comfortable and the finger lands securely after each shift. The arm (not the finger) accomplishes the “transportation” to the new position. Notice how my arm swings back and forth across my body for the 5th-3rd position shift. For the 3rd-2nd position shift my arm shifts and the fingers just lift and drop appropriately at the shift destination. ~swipe left~ 2) Shift a bit faster in rhythms ending in the lower and upper positions, alternatively. I practice with a “Huckleberry Finn” rhythm - holding each “Finn” longer so I can hear it clearly. #fearless #highnotes ! When #practicingviolin #climactic #altissimo register passages, I find the sound I want and find what I need to do to feel comfortable. Where is my arm? How are my fingers touching the string? Where is my #contactpoint where the #horsehair touches the #violinstring ? How much bow do I need to use to make the passage sound the way I want? (Hint: it’s usually a lot of bow! Students tend to restrict bow use in high passages - “Get me out of here!” LOL!) After I’m comfortable, then I go back and practice a longer excerpt containing the shift to the top. I want to feel comfortable and enjoy playing the passage rather than just cope with it until I return to a lower position! Here are two excerpts from #violinconcerto in #aminor by J. B. Accolay. 4 videos: 1) M 80 - start on high F, use lots of bow (it says to play largamente here). Play the first note a few times and then continue. My goal is to think, “The view is great up here!”, rather than, “I want to get out of here!” ~swipe left~ 2) mm 79-81 Only after I’m comfortable with the high register sound do I include the shift to the top in a longer excerpt. ~swipe left~ 3) M 130 Play high G with full bow. Get comfortable with the first note and then add subsequent notes. ~swipe left~ 4) Now go back to practice the approach (mm125-132).
