From Littleton, Colorado to Roseburg, Oregon, school shootings have stop being a rarity in our county to now just a normal occurrence. You would think within sixteen years, we as a society would realize what the real problem is and take the steps needed to solve it. There are far too many parallels that many of these tragicies all share. A young man fed up with the world and made to feel outcast by society. The truth is, they have. Many are quick to point to guns as being the problem but we must look at the real underlying problem, the state of mental health. People want to blame guns for killing people but that makes as much sense as blaming forks for making people overweight. At the root of it all is this, you have to focus on the person pulling the trigger and their state of mind. Far too many people have in the past seen the signs that something was wrong before all these tragicies happened but did not say anything or seek help for those people. Why are we so afraid as a society to help others? We much rather ignore the signs and pass them off as something that isn't a real issue. Walking Thru the Dark: 2

This world is full of sickness. We're such a diseased people, and our diseases are contagious. Your sickness impacts me greatly, and I know my sickness impacts you. Hatred and lies and bitterness are the death of us. But God, being rich in mercy . . . But God, being rich in . . . But God, being . . . But God . . . Today was AWFUL in Roseburg, Oregon. What an understatement. Sickness is rampant, and it shames me how I feel like I'm just now starting to understand how hard-core diseased we all really are. But that's just not the end of the story. I refuse to believe it, and if we stop there, if we wait too long there taking in the ugly of the world, we lose sight. But God . . . A perfect God was willing to take on all of my disease so that I could be completely made well as He died on the cross. Three days later, He ultimately won the fullest victory. Even my disease was not too big to take Him under. Jesus is alive. And because He's alive, because He is rich in mercy, today is horrific and horrific and horrific, but there is still HOPE and the only way I know to keep back the dark is to PRAISE Jesus. So I do, I praise Him. Jesus, You are GOOD. You are the Light of the World. You are Love incarnate. You mourn with us. You are so, so kind and empathetic and compassionate. You will hold us and heal us. You are the Creator, the Sustainer of Life, and in You all things hold together. I love You. I believe in You. Please come to Roseburg and sit with her in her tears. Can we embrace fact that the problem of shootings is not solely a gun problem, nor is it solely a problem of how people are being raised? Can we accept that an interface of factors lead to such occurrences? More love and and more reason poured into the killer’s life may have been a key factor in hindering the acts he performed. Which leads us of course to a bigger question involving the dearth of love, compassion and reason in the U.S, and of course, the world. That is a conversation to be had. But perhaps we can also recognize that even more simpler methods play a grand role in stifling such tragedies, such as more stringent gun policies.

Think about this example: you may wake up in the morning, and upon your entry into the day you might want a piece of cake for breakfast. Now, if you desperately wanted that piece of cake, you would most likely do everything in your power to get it. You might buy it at the store, or if the situation is somehow especially dire, maybe you’ll steal that piece of cake. But this is only if you are so wildly motivated. But if you had the slightest bit of laziness in you, and the cake was not provided so easily, you’re much less inclined to go to all that trouble for it, right? Now imagine you wake up, and the cake is next to you, right on your nightstand. Aha! If you want cake for breakfast, you’re incredibly more likely to eat it because it is so much more accessible.

Now, cake is very different than guns, yet the concept of human motivation remains the same. Although those wishing to harm may go above and beyond to obtain their weapons, why wouldn’t we do everything in our power to stop that momentum? While we wish to reconstruct humanity and better the world, can we not at the same time take even more simple steps to stop injustice? The loss of a life, the most precious commodity, should not result in a war about attributing the blame to one specific factor or another. It should open our minds up to every and any way to end such malefactions, such murders. Let us look critically and address all aspects that usher us into such turmoil we face now.

It’s so strange to think that we are the city that the country is talking about. The city that people thousands of miles away are sending their thoughts and prayers to. The city that’s reminding people who have been through similar situations about the tragedy that struck their cities and took their loved ones from them. We always hear about stuff like this in the news or on social media, but never think that it could happen to us. We’ve never been more wrong…

Pray for UCC

Pray for UCC and all the families and friends affected. 

Also pray for the tons of school aged people with anxiety that are going to feel even more afraid of going to school now because of this. It’s a terrible tragedy and the root of these evil acts and shootings in general really need to be addressed in our country. Doesn’t matter what color you are, what gender, etc.
