Module 1: Media Switch-Up - Pinterest
As a bride-to-be, many of my well-meaning family members and friends gushed about my future wedding. While I have yet to set a date (newest excuse: finishing my master’s degree...thanks Georgetown!), I am utilizing my free time to discover all the minute details that go into wedding planning. The perfect site to get some ideas such as mason jar centerpieces and tongue-in-cheek party favors? Pinterest.
I initially set up a Pinterest account in 2012. At the time, my boards were titled “Dream Closet” (photos of designer clothes), “Nom Nom Nom” (photos of food), “Crazy Cat Lady Time” (photos of cat stuff) and “Hurr Ideas” (photos of hair). Looking back, my 23-year-old self was a highly ambitious person who had yet to understand the complexities of necessary financial purchases such as buying a car and paying a mortgage. For her, the perfect way to spend her disposable income would be on designer dresses that cost more than her monthly rent. Good thing that I did not actually go through with that plan.
As I reacquainted myself with Pinterest today, I forgot about the platform’s staying power in the online domain. Pinterest is the ideal forum for users to post their favorite memes, recipes, clothing ideas and other images that suit their fancy. From my initial impressions, certain industries dominate the platform such as beauty, food, crafts, books and home decor. According to a Sprout Social report, brands such as Birchbox, Whole Foods, Scholastic, Better Homes and Gardens and Michaels are utilizing Pinterest brilliantly in marketing their products and services to their customers. From what I saw, Pinterest is geared towards creative people who want to do something whether it is cooking a new recipe, making a craft or trying a new make-up technique.
According to the Omnicore Agency (2019)’s statistics, the platform’s demographics include a large female population (81%). The median age of Pinterest users is 40. However, Pinterest users are mostly millennials. In addition, users typically have the income to purchase products seen on the platform. From my understanding, this means that the platform caters to users with higher household incomes. In sum, Pinterest users have money to buy things. 2012 me was doing Pinterest wrong by pinning items that I could never purchase. I should have stuck with pinning soup recipes.
After exploring Pinterest, I may consider using it more as I plan my wedding. Instead of having “dream life” boards, 2019 me is now an established, engaged woman with the means to have ideas become reality. I can now have “real life” boards with actual pins that are not too embarrassing.
