Cyanobacteria, man, I love it. I'm trying to think of happy things rn, morale is low because of 1, my math test, and 2, my environmental science project, so enjoy my brief rant on the coolest blue-green friend.
It really upsets me when people (and especially scientists, like guys have a sliver of respect) call the time before the Cambrian explosion the "boring billion" because it could not be further from the truth and diminishes all the coolness that these dudes had going on before the atmosphere even had oxygen. Has our perception of what's entertaining been so tarnished by flashing lights and the overstimulating modern world that we cannot see beauty in the prokaryotes that gave us, and all living things today, life? I view the GOE as reflective of much of humanity's struggles today. The cyanobacteria experienced their first mass extinction event at their own hands (or should I say flagella, oh wait! they don't have those. However, some variants have unique ways of movement that you should look into *cough* oscillatoria), history's first self-inflicted extinction, death via oxygenated fart. I realize as I'm writing this that it isn't very coherent, an amalgamation of my thoughts on my favorite kingdom of organisms. Regardless, I'm going to keep typing :P, I just realised as I'm typing that I used the word amalgamation, you know what else could be described as an amalgamation? COLONIES OF CYANOBACTERIA!!!!! Oh em geeee, I love when cyanobacteria bloom in stagnant water, and it hurts my soul deeply that it can often harm humans drinking water sources and present toxins, but a little shard of my heart cant help but feel like this is cyanobacteria's way of getting one last laugh at all the dirty oxygen breathers who thrive on the byproduct of their ancestors demise. If you're a cyanobacteria reading this, I urge you to think that these oxygen bretahers are not your enemy. Friend cyanobacteria, friend. I'm falling further and further into the caverns of my own delusion. I have personified cyanobacteria, and now I have personified my favorite organism as staunchly anti-oxygen breathers. What does this say about me? To end my train of nonsense on a nicer note, maybe in my AU, where cyanobacteria are sentient, they are appreciative of oxygen breathers, as we have found an effective way to use their waste; maybe we, as humans, need to find more effective ways to use our own waste. We know that human piss carries toxicants that can affect ecosystems, so maybe some person in my lifetime will become a human piss expert and find a way to change the world for the better. Anyways, that's all for my brain dump of the day. I will now leave Tumblr, my 30 minutes of escape from the dreaded environmental science project, and continue working away (it was due 2 days ago). Bye for now friends, and I hope to see you soon!!!!!
