Sisters and Liars
Chapter One
In a family of four beautiful sisters, Mary Bennet was the fifth. But on the day of her wedding, no one would have thought her anything less than the family beauty. Her face glowed with all the love and joy that could not be contained within. Her hair shone with health and the care of its dressing. Her dress, a gift from her eldest sister, was the height of elegance. And she seemed to float on air as she walked down the aisle on the arm of her father.
She was made all the more breathtaking in contrast to her last remaining single sister. Kitty attended Mary as her bridesmaid, and while she had made every effort to look pretty she could not make herself look happy.
The wedding bans were read and the vows were pledged and when the happy couple was announced husband and wife Kitty simply could not have been more miserable. But still, she practiced restraint all through the wedding feast, sitting quietly at her sisters side and listening to all the congratulations that came her sister’s way. It was not until after the cake had been presented that finally Kitty’s will broke, and without excusing herself - or being noticed to have forgone it - she left the high table and made her retreat outside.
She did not weep or sob. But tears fell down her cheeks as all her self pity welled up out of her heart. Neither her mother nor her father’s favorite. Not the most beautiful nor the most accomplished. Kitty was simply the last. It was a terrible thing to be.
She was so focused on her poor fortune that she didn’t hear when someone joined her.
“I understand,” Georgiana Darcy said quietly.
“Hmm?” Kitty sniffled, turning to her sister-in-law.
“It’s hard to be left behind. When Fitzwilliam married Lizzy I felt so scared that I’d be the odd one out. But it hasn’t been like that at all. It’s only gotten better having her with us. I feel less lonely than ever.”
“Well that’s different,” Kitty protested. “Lizzy came to you. But she left us. Everyone keeps leaving.”
“Then maybe you should leave too,” Georgianna said. “Come for a visit with me. My cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam will soon be a father. I’m to go and be whatever aid I can. I would dearly love some company. Will you accompany me?”
Just when Kitty was feeling the most unwanted she’d ever felt, Georgiana had shone a light onto her weary soul. Kitty could not consent fast enough.
