In the original pitch for the show, Sonia was supposed to have a sidekick. He would've been in love with her, something she did not reciprocate. A running joke would've been that he would try to save her from something, only for Sonia to save him instead.

He’d only seen his daughter for the first time last night, after six months of avoiding the nursery. He’d slowly worked himself up to doing it, having listened to the nannies talk about her, having caught glimpses of Zelda visiting her. He’d finally found that his curiosity outweighed his dread, that he hoped he could look into her little face and not find any resentment brewing in his heart.
Link prayed he wouldn’t be a monster.
He’d only managed a glimpse last night. He’d seen the golden blonde curls, a seamless mix of his hair and Zelda’s, he’d seen his own tan complexion on unblemished skin, chubby cheeks and little hands and feet, and he’d felt something. It had been such a tangled mess of emotions in his chest, but he knew none of it was bad, nor negatively directed at her.
He didn’t hate her. He didn’t transfer any of whatever he felt to her. He just saw a baby.
He just saw his baby.
Link had started to shake, had disappeared, had found Zelda and just held her for what felt like hours, shaking and not saying a word, before disappearing again.
And today, he just watched his daughter.
He hesitantly reached a hand out to her as she slept, but he stopped short of touching her. He was still a little afraid. She didn’t know him - she’d probably cry if he held her, she’d be scared.
She didn’t know him. Because he hadn’t been there for her.
He was a father and he hadn’t been there for her.
Just like your own father. Except he had the excuse of being dead. Perhaps you should be too.
Link’s hand shot back to his chest like he’d been burned.
It was stupid to compare himself to a man he never met. But the point still stood - little Princess Sonia didn’t know her father because Link hadn’t been there for her.
He didn’t even know how to be a father. It wasn’t like he had anything to go on. What did fathers do for their children? What father could he think of?
“Give me the Triforce!”
Link flinched again, heart racing, and he shook his head, wondering why that memory had popped up at all. He’d moved on from that ages ago, he wasn’t—Ganondorf wasn’t—
Link wasn’t as bad as him. He refused to be. So he reached forward, picking the baby up probably a little more forcefully than he should have, determined to prove to himself—
The baby started to cry, upset at being jostled, and Link stiffened, feeling his mind scream and his heart race, and he hastily put her back, stepping backwards until his back hit the wall.
One of the nannies entered at the sound of the girl’s tears, not noticing the king consort hidden in the shadows, and Link sank to the floor, tucking his legs to his chest and trying to catch his breath.
She hates you.
She was a baby, she couldn’t hate him—
What if you hurt her like he hurt you?
This was stupid, he was just—
What is wrong with me??
Could he be a father? Could he be a good one?
No one’s ever been your father. No one.
Link gasped a little, burying his face into his knees, covering his ears to drown out the sound of his baby’s wails as the nanny left with her, wondering why he was the way he was and if there was ever hope in fixing it.
