A/N: I have been a massive fan of Zootopia since 2016, and after seeing the sequel twice in cinemas recently, I had the urge to write something for it. I adore Nick and Judy, and I wanted to put them in a g/t scenario for fun. This is pure fluff, and I needed to write a confession scene for these two (but put a g/t twist onto it hehe). Please enjoy!
The steady thrum and buzz of the market filled Judy’s ears as she took in all the new scents and sounds. Going to the monthly Zootopia market had been on her list of things to do since moving to the city, but since starting her job at the ZPD, she had been occupied with more important matters. Now that things had calmed down since she and Nick had exposed the Lynxley family and put Reptile Ravine back on the map, she had a little bit of time to breathe and enjoy the different attractions of the city.
The city market was one of those things. Situated in the heart of Zootopia, the market focused on highlighting different cuisines from different districts. This was a way for animals who would never venture into other districts to try new food and learn more about how other animals live. Judy, of course, was keen to explore what the market had to offer.
Nose twitching, she tasted the delectable scents and allowed her senses to take her to where she wanted to be. A familiar yet exotic scent crossed her nostrils and she immediately followed it further down the market stalls. Her nose eventually led her to a stall with a variety of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. A female armadillo was tending to the stall and she immediately waved upon seeing Judy approach her.
“Greetings!” The armadillo smiled warmly at Judy. “You’re Officer Hopps, correct?”
Judy blinked. Despite saving the city twice now, she was still not used to other animals recognising her that easily.
“Yup, that would be me,” she answered. “I couldn’t help but to notice your beautiful stall. You have quite a nice range.”
The armadillo gushed. “Oh, you’re too kind. I am just a humble armadillo who has a bit of a green thumb.” She chuckled. “Well, more like a claw than a thumb. Anyhow, what can I get for you?”
“Nothing in particular,” Judy replied. “Although I probably will walk away from something in your stall today. You have such delicious smelling produce.”
“You can call me Anya.” The armadillo reached behind the counter and pulled out a basket full of brightly coloured purple carrots. “I don’t mean to assume, but I thought a bunny such as yourself might have an interest in these.”
Judy’s nostrils flared as the scent of the vibrantly purple carrots filled her senses. She had never smelt a carrot like these before.
“I grew up on a carrot farm and I’ve never seen carrots like these before,” Judy mused, staring at the purple carrots. “What are they?”
A grin stretched across Anya’s snout. “I knew you’d be interested in these. These are Philtron carrots. Incredibly rare but they have magical properties.”
Judy’s jaw slacked open. Her father had mentioned Philtron carrots when she had been a young kit. These carrots were extremely hard to grow, even in the best conditions. But magical properties? That was something she hadn’t heard before.
“Magical properties are a new one.” Judy gingerly picked up a carrot in her paw and turned the vegetable over. “What do you mean by that?”
“A Philtron carrot will make whoever you have your heart set on become closer than ever before.” Anya gave Judy a knowing smile and patted her paw with a clawed hand. “You keep that one. Take it as a token of my thanks for helping save Zootopia so many times.”
“Really?” Judy asked. “Are you sure? I can pay; it’s no problem─”
Anya pushed the carrot further into Judy’s paw. “Please take it. It’s my treat.”
Judy squeezed the carrot in her paw and gently tucked it into her duffel bag. “That is very kind of you. Thank you. I’ll be sure to come to your stall next month and buy your produce.”
“That is kind of you my dear,” Anya said hoarsely. “But before you go, I must tell you something important about the Philtron carrot.”
Judy’s ears twitched. “What is it?”
“The effects of the carrot will wear off in about 48 hours. So, when you use it, make sure you use it at the right time. Otherwise, you’ll be in trouble.” Anya began to rotate more of her stock around her stall, as if the information she had just voiced hadn’t been that serious at all.
Judy stared at the purple carrot in her paw, furrowing her brows. After her experience with the Night Howlers, perhaps there was some truth to Anya’s words.
“What do you mean in trouble?” Judy questioned the armadillo.
“Oh, it’s nothing too serious,” Anya reassured her. “But just make sure you use it at the right time. That’s the crucial part. If you do that, you won’t have to worry.”
“Okay…” Judy wasn’t sure what to think. But she didn’t feel right turning away a gift from someone, especially when it had just been handed to her.
“You have someone you care about, don’t you?” Anya asked. “Someone who means the world to you?”
Pink quickly blossomed across Judy’s muzzle and the tips of her ears turned red.
“Uh, I guess you could say that…”
“Good!” Anya exclaimed, a bright smile lighting up her features. “Have you told them how you feel?”
Judy squeezed her paws together nervously. “N-no, I haven’t told him.”
In all seriousness, Judy had been planning on telling Nick how she really felt about him for quite some time now, especially after their most recent case. Ever since that day, she had been replaying Nick’s ‘love ya, partner’ on her carrot pen almost every night before she went to sleep. She had realised that her feelings for the sly fox were clearly more than platonic – Nick was the most important person in her life, and she was his. But mustering up the courage to actually tell him still sent a spiral of fear down her stomach.
“Ah, you are afraid,” Anya remarked. “The carrot will help you tell him. You’ll become closer to him, trust me.”
“I don’t see how a purple carrot is going to do all of that,” Judy said.
Anya shrugged. “It is up to you, little bunny. You don’t have to take it if you don’t want it.”
Judy’s eyes widened. “No, no, I will take it. Thank you.”
Anya’s eyes crinkled with a smile. “Excellent. Well, the best of luck to you, Officer Hopps!”
“T-thank you,” Judy stammered, still not entirely sure what she had just agreed to, and then she left the market stall.
Judy hesitated before knocking on Nick’s apartment door. Her breathing quickened as heat burned against her neck. She had always been headstrong and assertive, yet talking to her best friend – no, her crush – about her feelings for him was almost flattening every shred of confidence that she had left. What if he didn’t return her feelings? If she confessed to him and he turned her down, how could they go about their jobs in the ZPD as partners? She feared that their friendship could become broken if she did this.
And yet, if she didn’t do this, her feelings would fester away unresolved and she would never know how Nick felt about her. How he really felt. After their most recent adventure, there was no denying that he cared deeply about her. He had even said it himself. Still, her nerves were fraying and her body began to freeze up.
Fumbling around in her pocket, she pulled out the Philtron carrot that had been given to her at the local market. Turning the vegetable over in her paw, her nose twitched as she remembered what Anya had told her.
I guess there’s no harm in trying.
Judy took a hesitant bite out of the carrot and chewed it rather hastily. The carrot itself was fairly small, and she consumed the entire thing in a few voracious bites. Admittedly, the carrot itself tasted delicious.
Swallowing back her nerves and a mouthful of carrot, she knocked on Nick’s front door.
“Look, whatever it is that you’re selling, I don’t want it.” Nick’s muffled voice resonated from behind the door.
“Nick, it’s me.”
Immediately, the door swung open and Judy was faced with the familiar red fox whom she had grown to trust so much. Instead of his usual variety of green and pink Hawaiian shirts, he was wearing a basic white tank top with his usual greyish-tan pants. He was dressed very casually, something Judy was not used to seeing.
“Hey, Carrots.” Nick cleared his throat, and tentatively closed the door so that she couldn’t see into the rest of his apartment. “What’s up? Something couldn’t wait until work tomorrow morning?”
Judy steadied her breathing. “Well, there’s something I want to talk to you about.”
Nick arched an eyebrow, his tail flicking to the side. “Oh? Must be pretty important I’m guessing.”
“You could definitely say that,” she responded. “Um, is it alright if I could come in?”
A look of alarm quickly spread across Nick’s face. “Remember when I said that foxes are solitary animals? I don’t have anyone over. Ever.”
“Please, Nick,” Judy persisted, her heart catching in her throat. “It’s not like I haven’t seen your apartment before. I promise I won’t judge. This conversation isn’t something we can have in a doorway.”
Upon hearing that, Nick’s eyes widened. “O-oh. I see. Well then.” He opened up the door fully, allowing Judy full access into his apartment. “Come on in I guess.”
Judy followed Nick inside, and scanned around the groggy apartment. Pizza boxes were still littering the floor since the last time she briefly saw Nick’s apartment, and an oversized jar of peanut butter was situated in the centre of the coffee table in front of the TV. It seemed that Nick couldn’t quite shake off his old habits.
Shaking her head, she ignored the messiness of the fox’s apartment. That wasn’t why she was here. Swallowing the lump that had begun to form in her throat, she gazed up at Nick, and almost got lost in the emerald orbs that were his eyes. Her eyes soon fell onto his exposed shoulders and trailed down his arms, taking in his sturdy frame. He really did look good, she noted.
“Carrots?” Nick’s voice brought her back to reality and her brain stuttered.
“U-uh, right, yes,” she stammered, running a paw through her ears nervously. “I have something really important to tell you.”
Nick folded his arms over his chest. “Okay. Hit me, bunny.”
“You know that I care about you,” she started slowly, her tongue almost tripping over the words in her mouth. “And after our most recent case, I felt like I needed to get something off my chest. This is something that’s been brewing away for a while now but I’ve been too afraid to say it.”
Nick continued to listen to her silently, his gaze softening.
Sucking in a deep breath, she forced the words to form on her tongue.
“Nick,” she said nervously. “I─”
Before she could finish her sentence, a strange sensation washed over her body. She paused as the sensation grew and the feeling of pins and needles prickled at her fur.
“Carrots?” Nick said softly.
“I─um─” Judy’s words were a mess as she tried to figure out what was going on. The strange feeling failed to subside, and then everything around her started to grow.
Judy was used to feeling small. She had felt small her entire existence, especially coming to Zootopia where the majority of animals there towered above her, Nick included. But now everything was becoming dangerously large on a scale that she wasn’t used to. Nick was always taller than her, but now he towered over her like an elephant.
“Judy!” Nick exclaimed, his voice booming from above.
Judy soon realised that everything wasn’t growing around her. No, she was shrinking. This became apparent when her clothes became so large that they completely slipped off her frame and she soon disappeared into the ocean of fabric.
“Nick!” she cried out, fumbling around in her oversized clothes.
“Hold on!” Nick’s voice was like a giant bass speaker and she flinched from the intensity.
Now completely buried in her own clothing, everything around her had gone completely dark. Squirming through her giant clothes, she pushed her way through to the neckline of her shirt. She was soon greeted with Nick’s enormous face as he sat hunched over her clothes, worry and concern painted across his face.
“Carrots?” Nick rasped, his voice considerably quieter as he took in her new smaller form. “You’re so…small.”
Quickly realising she was utterly nude, Judy instinctively hugged her shoulders and attempted to cover herself as best she could. Nick noticed this as well and quickly averted his gaze.
“W-what happened to me?” Judy croaked, fear rising in her chest. “One minute I’m standing in front of you, the next I’m as small as a mouse!”
“You mean you don’t know why you’re so small?” Nick questioned, his gaze focused on the wall of his apartment.
“Of course I don’t!” she exclaimed. “I-I really don’t know why this happened.”
“Okay, okay, just hold on one second.” The ground shook violently as Nick rose to his full height. A chill raced down Judy’s spine as she had to crane her neck just to look up at him. He was as large as a building compared to her now.
Nick padded away, his footsteps leaving large tremors that shook the floor of the apartment and it nearly made Judy fall onto her backside.
“Where are you going?” Judy shouted. “Nick!”
Nick returned not long after with a clean handkerchief in his paw. He leaned down and offered the piece of fabric to her.
“Don’t worry, it is clean,” Nick reassured her. “Just something to keep you covered in the meantime while we figure out what’s going on with you.”
Judy gratefully took the handkerchief and wrapped it around her tiny body so that it fit as snugly as it possibly could. Now that she was covered, she was met once again with Nick’s hypnotising vibrant green eyes. She could easily get lost in those eyes forever.
Lightly shaking her head, the gravity of the situation came crashing back down on top of her like a tidal wave. She was about the same size as Fru Fru now. What had caused her to shrink? Was this all some bad dream that she would wake up from? The crushing fact that she was so very small began to make her spiral into panic. Fear rose to her throat and her chest tightened with anxiety, her breaths coming out short and strained.
“Carrots,” Nick’s loud, but reassuring voice boomed from above. “Carrots, look at me. Everything is going to be okay.”
Fighting her rising panic, she forced herself to focus on Nick’s rumbling voice. When he wasn’t teasing her, his voice did have a rather calming effect on her mental state. She sniffled weakly, emerging out of her massive pile of clothing. Nick offered her an open paw, and gingerly she climbed into the centre of his paw pad.
Nick held her delicately and with the utmost care, brought her slowly towards his face so that she was closer to eye level with him. Her heart almost stopped at the closeness of the situation as Nick consumed her entire vision, but she forced the flustered feelings to the back of her mind.
“Hey, are you alright?” Nick asked gently, his warm breath tickling against her fur. She had expected his breath to smell like peanut butter, but she was pleasantly surprised when she detected a minty scent mixed in with his breath.
“I guess I’m alright as I can be,” Judy replied, frantically grabbing onto one of his fingers for support. “I-I don’t know what happened. Why am I so small?”
“Your guess is as good as mine,” Nick answered. “Anyway, solving cases is what we’re good at. We’ll figure this out.”
Judy gave him a small nod, her usual confidence evaporating. Being this small and vulnerable around Nick – right before she was planning on confessing her feelings to him – was not something that she could have ever anticipated happening and it left her feeling frazzled.
“Did you do something that might’ve caused this before coming to see me?” Nick questioned her.
Philtron carrot!
“The Philtron carrot!” Judy exclaimed, almost jumping up in the centre of Nick’s paw.
“The Philtron what now?” Nick stammered.
“Earlier today, I purchased a Philtron carrot at the Zootopia market,” Judy explained. “There was an armadillo selling exotic vegetables and fruits, and, well, she gave me this special carrot. She told me that it will make whoever…” The words instantly died on her tongue before she could finish her sentence as she realised what she was about to tell him. This was not the way she had wanted her confession to go.
“She told you what?” Nick asked.
“Um.” Judy began to nervously tap her foot, which, of course, Nick could feel through his paw pad.
“I can feel that, y’know.”
Shoot!
“She told me that…um…” Judy’s brain flailed around as she tried to think of a believable lie. But she was talking to Nick Wilde, the con artist of lying. Most likely whatever she managed to come up with, he’d be able to see right through her.
Nick watched her expectantly as he waited for her to say something.
“She told me that it will make whoever your boss is give you an instant pay rise the following day if I ate it,” Judy lied pathetically. It was a terrible lie, but she couldn’t think of anything else.
Nick furrowed his brows. “Yeah, I ain’t buying that. As if you of all people would care about a pay rise.”
“It’s true!” Judy persisted. She wasn’t ready to confess to him while she was like this, so she had to double down on the lie. “I need to get out of that crummy apartment. I’ve told you how noisy my neighbours are.”
“Yeah, and you told me you loved that about the place,” Nick shot back with a smirk. “Come on, Carrots. You aren’t helping yourself here.”
“Okay, fine,” Judy released a long sigh. This isn’t how she had wanted any of this to go at all, but what choice did she have? Nick easily saw right through her terrible lie.
“She told me that if I ate this Philtron carrot, it will make whoever I have my heart set on become closer to me. And I…I wanted to be closer to you, Nick.”
She faltered, her breath catching in her throat. Swallowing thickly, she steeled herself and locked gazes with him, her heart almost ready to fly out of her chest at any moment.
“Because I’m in love with you.”
A loud silence swallowed the entirety of Nick’s tiny apartment. The occasional stomping from the elephant gym above was the only sound that rattled through the walls of the shabby building. Judy closed her eyes, her face heating up to scorching levels as she averted her gaze from the giant fox that held her so delicately in the centre of his paw. She couldn’t face him like this. Now that she had finally said the words to him, how was he going to respond? This wasn’t like before when she had tossed the word to him after they had solved their first case. This was a real confession.
“Carrots.”
Judy slowly opened her eyes, and was nearly taken aback by the sheer emotion reflected on Nick’s face. There was a gentleness in his eyes that she had only seen rarely, but now, that was amplified tenfold.
“You have no idea how long I’ve waited to hear that.” His voice was dangerously soft, the usual teasing and sarcastic tone completely gone. “I’m in love with you, too.”
Judy’s heart was ready to explode out of her ribcage at that moment. It was as if time suddenly came to a standstill as Nick slowly leaned in closer towards her, his face consuming her entire vision. His warm breath encompassed her tiny frame and it sent a fluttering feeling of butterflies straight to her stomach.
“Judy…” Nick breathed, his voice surprisingly unguarded and vulnerable. “Can I kiss you?”
Judy’s breath hitched. A large part of her screamed yes to his question, but, at this size? How was it going to work?
“Are you sure you want to kiss me while I’m like this?” Judy asked, feeling more vulnerable than she ever had in her entire life. “I don’t know how it would work.”
“I don’t care what size you are,” Nick said. “You’re still you. And that’s all I want.”
Judy felt her heart melt right through her chest. “Really?”
“Of course. Although, you aren’t that much different that before.” He flashed her a toothy grin, showing off his pearly white canines. “You’re just a bit more vertically challenged than normal, which is saying something.”
She playfully punched his index finger and his face contorted into a wince.
“Ow! I actually felt that one.”
“Good. You’ll feel it even more next time.”
Both of them chuckled before returning back to the heartfelt exchange they had just had. Nick cleared his throat, the tips of his ears turning bright pink.
“I’ll be gentle, I promise. But tell me if it’s too much.”
“I’ll say the say safe word if it does,” Judy said. “Coconuts.”
Nick nodded. “Gotcha. Coconuts it is.”
Somewhat tentatively, Nick carried Judy on his paws and took a seat on the grey couch in the centre of the room. Now that he was seated, he slowly brought Judy closer towards his muzzle. She was so close now that if she stretched her arm out, she would be touching his nose. Ever so gently, he leaned a little bit closer, until his lips completely brushed over her tiny frame.
Nick’s kiss smothered her, but not in a harmful way. It felt as though the world’s warmest weighted blanket had been pressed down onto her in the most delicate way possible. There was hardly any pressure, just a velvety warmth that Judy found herself easily getting lost in.
Then, as soon as it had happened, the gentle heat soon dissipated around her. Nick had pulled back ever so softly, his eyes glazed and half-lidden, his breath uneven.
“Did I hurt you?” There was uncertainty in his voice, his ears drooping slightly. “Shoot, I knew that was dumb, I should’ve─”
Judy rested a tiny paw on his black nose, a small smile pulling at the corners of her mouth, which instantly silenced him.
“It was perfect.”
As soon as the words had left her lips, a loud thump, thump, thump, resonated from the couch. Judy peered over Nick’s fingers and saw that his tail was thumping aggressively against the fabric of the sofa. She glanced at him with a grin, and he gave her a somewhat sheepish smile.
Her smile stretched even further, a pink blush tainting her muzzle at the thought that even at this size, she was able to inflict this sort of reaction from him. Nick was somehow even redder than his own fur, which was quite an accomplishment. He stared at her, rather lost for words, a somewhat dazed look painted across his face.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” he said breathlessly.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted you to do that,” she chuckled lightly, squeezing one of his fingers. “You can do it again, y’know. I would really like that.”
Nick’s signature grin soon returned to his muzzle. “Don’t tempt me, sweetheart. I’m not sure how much restraint I have left right now.” He began to gently stroke her back using the pad of his thumb and she practically melted against his touch. “I don’t see why you needed to eat a magic carrot to tell me that.”
“I guess it is pretty silly, isn’t it? And now look at how small I am.” Judy giggled.
“On the plus side, I guess you’ll finally be able to go shopping with Fru Fru now that you’re the same size as her.” Nick smirked.
“Seeing Fru Fru would be a good idea. I don’t think I can handle wearing this handkerchief for any longer and I know she’ll have some clothes for me,” Judy replied. “The armadillo said that the effects will wear off in 48 hours, which means I’ll be stuck like this for a while.”
A sudden wave of dread hit her like a brick as she realised that she had work tomorrow morning.
“Oh, cheese and crackers. I can’t go to work like this! What would Chief Bogo think?”
“Chief Bogo may like you, but he doesn’t like you that much.” Nick scratched his chin in thought. “I suppose you’ll just have to lie and call in sick tomorrow.”
All of the colour rapidly drained from Judy’s face. “No, I am not calling in sick. I can’t do that.”
Nick narrowed his eyes. “Why not? Everyone gets sick.”
“But I’m not sick!” Judy exclaimed. “I can’t lie about something like that!”
Nick exhaled loudly, his frustration beginning to show. “Okay, so what is the alternative? You tell him the truth?”
“N-no,” Judy replied. Nick was right. She couldn’t tell Chief Bogo about this. Calling in sick until she returned back to normal was the only option.
“Right,” Nick said. “At least we can agree on that. And I guess I’ll be calling in sick too so I can look after you.”
“You don’t have to do that, Nick. I’ll be fine.”
The red fox gave her a stern look. “Nope. Not happening. No point in me going into work without you there.”
A faint blush bloomed across her cheeks. “You really mean that?”
Nick gave her one of his classic playful smirks that she had grown to love so much. “You know I mean that, Carrots. Besides, you’re gonna need all the help you can get now that you’re such a half pint.”
“Hmm, and maybe I should call you Foxzilla while I’m at it,” she mused.
“Careful, this fox isn’t all bark, y’know.” Nick gave her a playful nudge with his nose, which sent her softly falling back against his fuzzy fingers. “Bunnies this small and pretty should be careful with what they say.”
Judy’s ears perked. “Oh, did I hear that right? I’m pretty?”
“More than that.” He gave her a heated look, his voice lowered. “You are stunning, Judy.”
Her heart was ready to burst and the feeling of butterflies quickly returned to her stomach. Gazing up at Nick like this, she was able to appreciate every single feature of him. His beautiful emerald eyes were almost hypnotising, and the plush softness and warmth that was emanating from his fur was threatening to lull her to sleep. The sharpness of his jaw, to his deliciously lean frame was amplified from her perspective and she absorbed every detail of it.
“You’re beautiful too, Nick.”
She leaned in close to his muzzle and planted a tiny kiss on his cheek.
Instantly, she felt the giant fox almost tense up as she delivered the kiss, almost as if he was afraid of accidentally hurting her if he moved even just an inch. Once she pulled away, she was met with the most heartfelt look from the fox that she had ever seen.
“I suppose…this kind of goes without saying…” Nick scratched the back of his neck with his free paw. “Would you like to spend the night here? Unless you want me to drop you back at your apartment?”
Judy’s eyes widened and her heartbeat flared in her chest. The very idea of staying overnight at Nick’s place was something that she had always wanted (despite how messy his place was), since she had known she had feelings for him.
“It would be nice if I could stay here,” she answered, trying to withhold her excitement.
“Right. Well, I’ll take the couch, you can take my bed.” Nick shifted off the couch and sauntered down the hallway of his apartment towards his bedroom.
“Slick, come on, I’m tiny, we can share the bed.” Judy tapped his fingers with her little paws. “I’m sure your bed isn’t that small.”
“Are you sure?” Nick entered his bedroom, which didn’t have much, save for a rickety bed in the middle and piles of Hawaiian shirts of various colours scattered across the floor. “I don’t want to roll on you in my sleep. And to be honest, I don’t want you to become a bunny pancake because of my furry behind flattening you.”
“I think I can handle it,” she grinned. “I’ve dealt with worse. Besides, if it does happen, I’ll give you kick that’ll wake you up. Even at this size I can still pack a punch.”
Nick parted his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
“Okay, I can attest to that,” he said at last, heaving a somewhat defeated sigh. “It’s just as well that foxes are mostly nocturnal anyway so I don’t need that much sleep.”
Judy beamed from ear to ear as Nick gently lowered her onto the springy mattress. She watched as he moved onto the bed, his weight causing the mattress to dip and she nearly slid down and collided into him. Nick was quick to scoop her into his paw, and carefully he placed her on top of a pillow. He laid down next to her on the opposite side of the bed, his jade eyes meeting hers.
“Nick,” Judy breathed.
“Carrots?” he murmured.
“I want you to hold me,” she said. “Please.”
A soft smile spread across his muzzle as he scooped her up into his paw, and placed her gently down onto his chest. His paw draped over her small body, acting like a giant furry blanket.
“How’s this?” His voice rumbled all around her, and it filled her with a fuzzy feeling of safety and warmth. How could she feel anything else when the person who she trusted and loved the most was all around her? She was in her own sanctuary – and that sanctuary was Nick.
“Perfect.”
Judy snuggled into Nick’s velvety fur, her eyelids sealing shut as the rhythmic yet comforting sound of his gentle heartbeat softly lulled her to sleep.
