In the featured 16th-century Russian icon, you can see two distinguished saints, Procopius of Ustyug (on the left) and Barlaam of Khutyn (on the right). Who were they?
Procopius of Ustyug was a fool for Christ and a miracle worker who predicted the fall of a meteorite near Veliky Ustyug, a town in Vologda Oblast, Russia. As for Barlaam of Khutyn, also known as Varlaam, he was born to a wealthy family in Novgorod. After the death of his parents, Barlaam decided to hand all of his wealth to the poor and became a hermit who later healed the Grand Prince Vasily.
