Happy Birthday, Pat Precieux! 🎂🥳🎁🎈😘
“I suppose Lilith might come,” Sherlock remarks. “Did you put her on the list?”
John scans the invitation list for the wedding. The name is familiar, but there could be more than one person with that name. “Lilith Durant? She’s on the list, but I don’t remember meeting her.”
Sherlock sighs deeply, but doesn’t reply.
“She’s another cousin, right?”
“No, not a cousin.”
“Hm. Family friend? Old school chum?” He chuckles. “Ex-girlfriend?”
“John. You know I have never had a girlfriend.”
“What about Janine?”
“Janine who?”
“Sherlock — you bought her a ring. You made her wear the hat. Seven times a night in Baker Street—”
“Don’t be ridiculous, John. I exploited Janine, and she used the opportunity to make some money. Quite a lot, as it turns out, though I’m not sure why anyone would want to read such tripe. In any case, women are not my area, as I told you that night—”
“Right. Our first date, wasn’t it?” He grins. “If only I’d realised it then.”
“Realised what? That we were on a date? How could you not realise? There was a candle, John. Of course it was a date.”
“Yeah, but no goodnight kiss. I thought we were on a stakeout. And you were already married, you said. Though I suppose you might have been tempted to cheat on the Work.”
“As it turns out, bigamy is in my future. Unless you think I should divorce the Work.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it. Anyway, who’s Lilith?”
“Mycroft’s wife.”
John stops moving, doesn’t even blink. For a good sixty seconds, he feels as if he’s on pause. Finally he blinks, looks at Sherlock, and says, “Wife?”
