🔷 LEGEND OF SOLCHOGE 🔷 ___________________________________________________________ A few months back, the Mile Style Militia headed out to Portland, OR to tackle the largest relay race in the world. Part of that weekend was coming up with nicknames for each other. After Sol cranked out her fastest mile (7:28) on one of her first legs of the relay, @willnotrohe randomly blurted out “Solchoge”, igniting looks of awe & utter joy amongst the crew. It just made sense to us. It rolled off the tongue effortlessly. It was almost as if the name were meant to be. Albeit absurd for anyone to be compared to the God of running, the name stuck. Sol has continued to amaze the Mile Style Family time and time again, running longer distances at faster speeds. Yesterday was her 2nd marathon in 3 weeks. She ran all 26.2 miles, without stopping, not even on the bridges, not even at the most lit cheer zone where we all lost our voices screaming for her, because she had a job to finish. And so she did. 🔷 SUMMER CAMP 🔷 _____________________________________________________ Some of the Mile Style Militia had the opportunity to head up north to the “wild wilderness” of New Paltz for an immersive, fun filled weekend of hot (and cool) runnings with the rest of @nikenyc’s #ProjectMoonshot initiative. Set on the serene campus of SUNY New Paltz, we shacked up in dorms, ate dining hall food, and shared showers with roommates (at separate times, of course). But we also shared miles and smiles, and lots of ‘em. From a sweltering hot track work out, to calming meditation and yoga sessions, to diving in the deep end of the campus pool, Saturday was all about putting the body into motion and the mind into a space of tranquility. But Sunday is what we were all here for tbh. A long run through the trails of The Mohonk Preserve, surrounded by lush greenery, shade from the tree line, and the soft sounds of foot hitting grass and gravel. Runner’s high is a real thing, and man, we got high as a kite. Hell of a weekend. _____________________________________________________ Much love to @nikenyc for investing in the dreams of folks from all different creeds & colors, and for giving us a short vacay from the hustle & bustle of the concrete jungle. To @mktg_inc for working day & night to ensure everyone was taken care of. Ya’ll are top notch. To the Project Moonshot staff, pacers & coaches alike, who put their best foot forward (pun intended) to make sure over 300 people cross that finish line. About two months after the conclusion of #projectmoonshotnyc 2017, when I was in the process of prepping for Boston 2018, @elizaq and Zev joined me for a Strawberry Field hill workout. They were curious about what I put myself through every week, so I gave them a small taste of what I conduct on Mondays with the @suicidehillracingclub. When the repeats were done, as Eliza took in some veeeeery deep breaths, I told her Boston qualifying was a real possibility not just something beyond the moon. Her finishing result at the NYC marathon was an indication of how close she was to one day ascending Heartbreak Hill as a Boston marathon participant. To achieve this, it would take an equal measure of belief and dedication. If she wanted to go for it in Berlin, given the right conditions, fortune smiling at every turn, she could get very close, if not realize a unicorn dream. We made a pact. Project BQ Eliza was born. After a winter/spring of long runs exploration, runs where I frown upon the questioning of pace every other minute, Eliza got in a solid base in time for #projectmoonshot 2018. During this time, I kept reinforcing to Eliza my belief that what seemed out of reach was, in reality, closer to probability than not. When she began to take part in the Monday hill workouts at the start of summer, she came with an attitude of embracing the unknown. As the weeks went by, improving her form, her strength, and more importantly becoming tough as nails in that all-important headspace, I had a feeling something special was in the works. I didn't tell her but 3:35 was out the window, the target changed to 3:30. By the time early September rolled around, Eliza did everything needed to put herself in the best position to run her heart out at Berlin. On Sunday, September 16, Project BQ Eliza came to an end.
