The ability not to trust the people around you must have been contagious, because Sam had started to wonder if Cas and Benny, Benny mostly, would betray him once they found the last piece. He decided that he needed to keep something to himself. If they betrayed him, they would never find the gold, but if they didn’t they could still split it.
He needed to make sure that if something happened to him someone knew about it though, so he sent secret messages to his brother. Dean would never know what was in his postcards, unless someone told him to look for it. He hoped that if Benny did something, then Cas would know to look to Dean for help. He was the main person Sam talked about after all.
Their group wasn’t the only ones looking for the journal, and Sam had to rethink his parents’ disappearance once he knew that Crowley was looking for it as well. He hadn’t met him personally, but the MacLeod family was well known throughoutin history. They thought they had a claim over the gold because they had helped to fund Magellan’s expedition.
Apparently, Crowley had hired a new person, Bela Talbot, to try to find the journal. He had resources that their group would never have access to. They just had to be careful and a little faster than Bela.
That worked out until they showed up at the tomb. There had been no one there when they made their way inside. Cas stayed outside to act as lookout, while Benny and Sam made their way into the depths looking for the journal.
They had found it too, but they didn’t make it out before Bela and her goon squad came in behind them. Sam wasn’t sure what had happened to Cas, but it had to be something serious for him to let her get the jump on them. Cas had never been the one that Sam didn’t trust, it was Benny.
They were leaving through a tunnel that led to the surface, when gunshots went off. Benny slipped down another tunnel and Sam went down. He knew he had been shot, but he had no way of knowing just how bad it was. He called out for help, but he couldn’t see Benny any longer. Apparently, the tunnel was another exit, Benny was gone. He had abandoned Sam after all.
After a few minutes, a thin woman with long hair that had been wound up in a bun stood over him. “Hello there. I believe you may have teamed up with the wrong person. Lafitte isn’t known to have many friends.” She pointed up the tunnel that Benny had gone down, “that’s why.”
Sam couldn’t help but agree, but he wondered again about Cas. If Bela didn’t know he was out there, then Sam wasn’t going to tell her. Hopefully, Cas would watch his back and not let Benny take advantage of him as well.
Two men came up and pulled Sam to his feet, causing him to scream out in pain. This was definitely going down as one of the worst days of his life. He stopped to spare a thought for Dean. His brother would never know what happened to him. The postcards would just stop and he would have no way of knowing about Cas, or Benny, or even where he had been. Unless someone went looking for him. Sam really hoped that if it happened, that it would be Cas.
