"For many of us, water simply flows from a faucet, and we think little about it beyond this point of contact. We have lost a sense of respect for the wild river, for the complex workings of a wetland, for the intricate web of life that water supports."--— Sandra Postel
Last Oasis: Facing Water Scarcity
One of the things I do find very disturbing about humans is that when I hear an animal begins to recover in a certain area, having been hunted or having habitat destroyed, to near extinction, cries of "yay" we can hunt them again begin. Why those voices are loudest, I do not know. In this case, I'm not talking about Florida, although I could. I wonder if we will ever consider the value of an apex predator for its critical place in the environment that we rely on, rather than how fun it is for for a few people who enjoy killing. I do pray we evolve beyond this instinct - killing for fun. God knows I'm no hunter, but I do hope voices that consider the circle of life will begin to be loudest, and that we don't continue to repeat mistakes of allowing humans to hunt and destroy to extinction again and again. It has happened, and will happen again, unless we learn respect, educate ourselves, exhibit caution, and for god's sake, evolve beyond brutish instincts.
