On Public Polls
We, the people of these United States have long been forced to live under the absurd tyranny of public polls. Publicized as snapshots of the public’s opinion and mood, polls more readily impress upon the masses an idea, coercing them to believe a particular state of things might exist and exist in numbers that are in fact not quite real. Often, when multiple questions are asked, the ridiculous and illogical nature of the whole thing is revealed, with answers at rather stark odds with each other, making it clear that most of us do not hold coherent views on matters of politics and policy. I do not claim to dismiss the scientific method of a significant portion of public polling and the truths they can reveal, but their margins of error are crucial signs enough that these are not precise measurements. Beyond that, it is the intention and effect of them that I especially despise. A significant number of pollsters are in fact not simply in the business of gathering data on what the public thinks, but seek to influence and change what it is that the public is thinking. This is the Frank Luntz villainous school of public polling.
But now, to a small example of the inanity of some public polling and the asinine habit of holding their findings as objective reality. At present, Barack Obama has an approval rating ranging from 49% to 53%, and this held to augur favorable ends for his own party and its nominee. However, the wrong track poll, which measures the nation’s mood on the general direction of the country showcases the following - An average of 68.9% of our fellow citizens think the United States is on the wrong track. It is important to note though that this particular poll tends to show almost perennial disenchantment, as so much as a majority of the country always feels the country is going in the wrong direction. An exception sometimes comes about during a new president’s first month or two, and then a majority of the populace immediately swings back to thinking we are due for a major course correcting. Yet, there is a sharp conflict here, for how can it be that while only 23.1% of Americans believe the country to be on the right track, roughly half of them nonetheless approve of the job the president is doing? So, we see not much sense is made here. And therefore, we must allow ourselves some distance from what the pollsters and media would have us believe, for even at their most benign, they are simply being short-sighted.
