ok i’ve now come to the conclusion that actually, the reason why i prefer poetry and even drama over prose is that like, i get really annoyed with boring narrators/overly irritating narrators really fast and you constantly have to filter everything through the narrator’s gaze. and sure sometimes that works but a lot of the time if the writer isn’t sure of what they’re doing, it just ends up being confusing and i find it hard to get invested.
whereas with drama like the writer has to either tell you everything you’re supposed to look at, which means that if something is important, it’s going to be mentioned directly in the stage directions and they mean something to the scene the writer is building. plus there’s the added element of performance and directorial use of space.
It’s the same with poetry i think. it’s like, i find a lot of the poetry i like condenses things into good images that immediately use everything around them for a clear purpose. i like analysing poetry because if the form is that way and those specific words are chosen in that order, it’s usually for a clear and obvious purpose.
probably why i’m not a fan of confessional poetry though.
