"I don't care what they said! It doesn't mean shit!" Dallas barks out, desperate and upset at Ponyboy, glaring at him balefully. "They can't take you out of class!"
"They already did," Ponyboy points out to him as they keep walking towards the other end of the school where Angela is. He knows it's not the best thing to point out to Dallas, who's already upset, but well. That's right. "I'm too smart for the regular classes. My parents already know, I'm not going back."
"You're just gonna let it happen?" Dallas scowls, and man. It's almost a little funny how upset he is that Ponyboy is moving up a grade.
Ponyboy offers him his cigarette. Dallas plucks it up with a scowl, Ponyboy grinning a little. "I don't know why you're so mad, Dal. You don't even go to real classes, you just show up to mine." The glare that Dallas levels at him could peel paint for anyone else. Not Ponyboy as he takes the cigarette back. "You ain't the one who's gonna have more homework, I am!"
"That ain't the point," Dallas kicks a rock as they finally get to where the detention classes are. "The point is you're leavin' me! That ain't fuckin' fair."
Ignoring him, Ponyboy crouches down to bang on the basement window. "Angela!"
There's an answering bang, both of the boys pulling back. "Dal, it doesn't matter. You can just follow me to the ninth grade classes. I think the teachers know who you are already, anyhow. No one's ever cared about you following me around before."
Dallas still looks mad as hell — worried as hell, even after Angela finally emerges from the detention building. Her hair is a mess, but her eyes spark up the instant she sees them. "Is it true? You're going to the ninth grade?"
"He's leaving us!"
"Can you quit acting like I'm dying, Dal?!"
