A Light To Guide You Home (Jack O’ Lantern Spell for Samhain)

Throughout time, Jack o' Lanterns have been used on Samhain (or Halloween, whatever you celebrate) to ward off spirits. While I love the concept of banishing evil spirits from my home, as someone who worships a chthonic deity, the traditional Jack o' Lantern doesn't exactly suit my needs. I like to spend Samhain with my family and friends, practicing minor spirit work and witchcraft through divination. It's a perfect day for me to spend time with loved ones that I've lost too soon.

This spell is to ward off those pesky evil spirits, but warmly welcome our loved ones back into our home during this time. Enjoy!

What You’ll Need:

Naturally occurring white pumpkin (for purity, but also to guide spirits as opposed to it's orange counterpart)

Cinnamon (to purify negative energy)

Allspice (luck in spiritual guidance as it was used as an embalming tool, courage, and power)

Cardamom (hospitality, to let our ancestors know they're welcome)

Mace - The spice! Please do not put mace spray into your pumpkins!(enhancing psychic abilities)

Clove (purification, prosperity, friendship)

A black or white tea-light candle (for banishment or purity)

A sigil (you can use your own, or the one I've provided*)

A serrated knife

A spoon or scoop

A black permanent or dry-erase marker (to help draw the face of your pumpkin! )

A bowl/bag/etc to store the filling in while you perform the ritual

Keep the seeds!*

Ritual:

Use a serrated knife to cut out a lid for your pumpkin

On the inside of the lid, carve your sigil. Be careful not to cut through your lid!

Remove the filling from the pumpkin, and visualize your goal of repelling negative spirits from your home. Bonus points for scooping out the filling in a counter-clockwise direction!

Set the filling aside for later.*

In a clockwise direction, pour the spices on the bottom of the pumpkin (it doesn’t have to be a lot!) in the following order: Cinnamon, Allspice, Cardamom, Mace, Clove

While you pour the spices, visualize yourself welcoming the spirits of your ancestors into your home. Alternatively, you can visualize your favorite memories of them!

You can use this opportunity to carve your pumpkin as normal (especially if you’re a closet witch) or you can even carve your sigil into the face of your pumpkin as well!

Set the Jack o’ Lantern outside your front door, and be sure to channel the same positive, welcoming energy when you light the candle at night.

Hello fellow witches!! Long time no post!~💕

I had to step away from regular practice for a while since my mental health was pretty bad and I always had such low energy, but I’m more stable now! Slowly working towards healing with the help of meds, mindfulness, and self-care.

This is the start of the one of my favorite seasons, and what better way to celebrate than doing my first spell since taking a break! I wanted to approach this season with the idea that I will grow and prosper as I learn and heal, and I found the perfect spell by the lovely gals over at The Witch Bitch Amateur Hour Podcast! I did some deep cleansing today, both literally and spiritually, and set this up to prepare for fall and the following months to come.

Macy’s Halloween Time Practical Protection and Intention, Wealth, Prosperity of the Home and Hearth Spell for The Modern Practitioner of Witchcraft or Spirituality and... Yeah!

As Macy states, this can be tweaked to your personal taste and you can customize it to whatever your intentions are.  I am writing here how I did the spell personally, but it’s entirely up to you how you do it!!~

***Since this spell involves a lot of candles, PLEASE practice basic fire safety!  Either work outdoors or leave your windows open for airflow, ect.  Be smart folks.***

You will need:

A Pumpkin (can be of any size or color, I chose a small one because I’m still in the broom closet and it sits on my windowsill inconspicuously)  with a deep divot at the top where the stem is, in order for your slips of paper to rest in and for the candles to pool down and seal them in.

Scraps of paper and a pen to write down your goals/intentions for this pumpkin.  Pen ink color can also be associated with intention!

Candle(s) of any colors associated with your goals/intentions.  I used birthday candles since they’re small and easy to use!

For my pumpkin, I’ve done the following:

 I’ve added a small quartz shard to the base of the divot enhance the potency of the overall spell, since it is a small pumpkin and I am still recovering.  Think of adding quartz as a booster!

I chose a green candle for healing, harmony, growth, and wealth, an orange candle for success (in my schoolwork/studies), and ambition, yellow for happiness and creativity, pink for romantic and platonic love, and a white candle to substitute for protection and friends/family.  

I also anointed my pumpkin with blessed water

I SHOULD have cut off the stem of the actual pumpkin, as it also managed to burn with my candles!  Was kind of cool, but it also could have burned my whole pumpkin up, so don’t be like me and cut off the stem/as short as possible!

To Cast:

Gather your materials, cleanse your space, and ground yourself.  You may cast a circle if you choose to do so.

Grab your strip(s) of paper and write down your intentions for the upcoming months, be it spiritual growth, peace, protection, strength, ect.  Fold them up and place them into the divot of your pumpkin, pushing them down till they sit in place at the bottom.  If you’d like to do what I did, add your crystal chips or small shards to the divot.

Choose your candles according to what you’ve written down, and place them on the top of the divot.  You may have to melt the wax at the base of the candles and then press them on in order for them to stay in place, or angle them inwards to the center of the pumpkin.

Light your candles and hold/touch your pumpkin.  Hold it the whole time the candles burn down, and fill your pumpkin with your intentions.  Visualize, thinking on the candle colors and what you’ve written down, and pour your energy into it.  (My pumpkin was small and the heat radiated pretty hard from the candles, so I simply allowed my fingers to touch it and that’s how I connected to it). 

As your candles burn down to their bases, finish your meditation and seal your words with the candles.  Try to let them burn down as much to the base as possible, but be careful that your actual pumpkin doesn’t catch fire!  Blow the candles out if necessary, using this breath as a breath of energy to seal the deal, and let go and allow the wax to cool.  Open up your circle now if you casted one.

You may now place the pumpkin wherever you can see it/your altar/place of importance.

This pumpkin will last about 90 days, or about 3 months.  When the season is over, remove the wax from your pumpkin, clean out any crystal chips you added, and compost the pumpkin back into the earth; give it thanks for its use!

I hope I was able to annotate the spell properly!  Again, you may change your approach to the spell and tweak it however you please.
