Day 46/100: The Interrobang. It has all the drama and excitement of “?!” but without having to type two characters. What could be more useful than that?! The interrobang, also known as the interabang ‽ is a nonstandard punctuation mark used in various written languages and intended to combine the functions of the question mark (also called the "interrogative point") and the exclamation mark or exclamation point, known in the jargon of printers and programmers as "the bang". Day 40/100: The Hedera. (Another excuse to share a #heart!) "Hedera" is Latin for ivy which perhaps explains the likeness of this #punctuationmark to a heart-shaped ivy leaf. The hedera is found primarily in early Latin and Greek texts. Its purpose was to signify a break between paragraphs, as well as to look nice upon the page. Also known by some as a 'fleuron', the mark had a strictly ornamental use; perhaps the reason for its extinction? There are many different variants and designs of the hedera, and the mark can be placed vertically or, alternatively, rotated onto its side and displayed horizontally. Day 17/100: The 'commercial at' symbol that was a bit unloved prior to email. Now it's in constant use everyday around the world, and in languages other than English it has some pretty cool & clever names: In DUTCH - "apestaart" meaning 'monkey's tail'. In ITALIAN - "chiocciola" meaning 'snail' In NORWEGIAN - "kroellalfa" meaning curled 'a'. In FINLAND - "miukumauku" because it looks like a sleeping cat. In DENMARK - "snabel-a", with snabel meaning the trunk of an elephant. And so many more. Where you @?
