being gen z i am Also not a big fan of the revival of sexual conservatism amongst my age bracket. but i also think its insane that some people believe this is
unique to gen z
universal to gen z
like i remember at my high school graduation one guy gave this big speech about how it was Our Job To Fix The World! it was up to us now to solve climate change and everything! which annoyed the hell out of me for a number of reasons, the major one being that we were a bunch of 18 year olds. this was a grown man. talking about so many extremely complex issues which fundamentally require solidarity amongst so many people, across generations, long-term, to "fix."
its an extension of how ageism dehumanizes children by projecting "innocence" onto them, depriving them of the right to be messy and imperfect and growing humans, turning them into objects that adults can project a desire for purity and salvation onto. it connects directly to the belief that social progress is inevitable, that younger generations will be more accepting and intelligent not because of intergenerational efforts to strive for a better world but because young people are supposed to make up for all the mistakes of their parents through that intrinsic "innocence."
and then, when that illusion inevitably shatters, when young people are people with flaws and anxieties and normal human issues, when it becomes clear that the youth will not save the previous generations from everything in the world they are scared and ashamed of, the ageism doesn't go away. it transmogrifies. the "innocence" of youth is reimagined as young people (particularly teenagers) being a corrupting force, no longer the embodiment of adult hopes but adult fears.
tl;dr yes, puritanism amongst young people is a problem, racism and misogyny and conservatism in general amongst young people is a problem. because young people are people in a puritanistic, racist, misogynistic, conservative society. stop waiting for young people to solve all the world's issues and get some fucking intergenerational solidarity in your life.
SOME Hannibal fans if they were given the script of the show & were told it was a fanfiction: OP, this is really fucking dark and disgusting. Are you sure we need this sort of content in fandom spaces? Children could read this, you know. I mean, I know this is the Hannibal fandom, but you still shouldn't be writing anything like this. There are so many other things you could write about, lol. I mean, first of all, it's really out of character -- Hannibal would never hurt Will like that. Also, it's super problematic to say that a man would ever have sex with a lesbian. That's just wrong and gross. Are you sure you don't have a fetish of some kind? And the part with the guy who eats his own face?? That's disgusting and really violent. There's something wrong with you if you're writing about those things. Um. It's just not what we need in the silly gay cannibal fandom. You should delete this.
something i find frustrating about Life lately is how people just absolutely refuse to experience any discomfort. and i dont mean this in the boomer "wah kids have it too easy theyre all pushovers and pussies" way, but i mean people will go crazy over anything thats not totally 100% sanitised and comfortable and pure and whatever the fuck. a show has a sex scene and you dont like it? people used to just look away for a second and maybe cringe. now it's a whole thinkpiece. people would rather ghost their friends or let issues fester rather than ever address an issue in their relationship with them. they wont let their friends vent in case it makes them uncomfortable. like can you just buck the fuck up and let things be a bit awkward sometimes? it wont kill you.
"I can remain a pure and innocent person if I just don't expose myself to problematic media; in fact, I think we can make all of society just and righteous by making sure nobody is exposed to problematic ideas ever" is what happens when you try to solve moral problems with your caveman brain's understanding of contagions and poisons.
The thing is, your caveman brain is good at making sure people stay away from contagions and poisons most of the time, but it's also notably flawed, like being unable to distinguish between genetic illnesses and viral illnesses, and not being able to tell the difference between "bitter thing that will kill you" and "bitter thing that will heal you."
You can't just rely on gut feelings all the time like this. You have to actually make the effort to learn the real causes behind things, and to learn to tell the difference between what's actually dangerous and what might appear dangerous but isn't. Relying on your caveman brain is dangerous and ultimately a way to avoid actual learning and critical thinking. When you choose to just go with the caveman brain, you choose to be lazy and irresponsible.
This pure infantilizing of teenagers nowadays has gotten fully ridiculous.
Teenagers can handle "heavy" or "sensitive" topics. Teenagers often should be exposed to those topics, especially when it's things that they themselves do experience and go through.
I don't think people like this woman could've handled Degrassi. (Which was an important, topical show for teens.)
I think one of the funniest things about puriteens and other young antis is that they simultaneously insist they and their demographic are too young to be able to read the content in question, AND are old enough to be able to engage with the content properly to produce a structurally sound rebuke based on the themes contained within.
You're not old enough to read it, but you are old enough to condemn it?
This would be like a cohort of under-21s trying to bring Prohibition back... and being taken seriously in doing so.
