Bill Bramhall:: Onward ::
Fun fact: During his 1812 invasion of russia, Napoleon made it to Moscow, only to find that the russian capital had been moved to St. Petersburg 400 miles away in 1732
+
The Russians were none too impressed by his 1812 overtures.
But sometimes it is just when everything seems to be lost that we experience a presentiment that may save us; one has knocked on all the doors which lead nowhere, and then, unwittingly, one pushes against the only one through which one may enter and for which one would have searched in vain for a hundred years, and it opens.
from In Search of Lost Time, Book 7: Finding Time Again by Marcel Proust
I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
Michael Jordan
"Pain is your friend, your ally. It will tell you when you are seriously injured. It will keep you awake and angry. And remind you to finish the job and get the hell home. But you know the best thing about pain? It lets you know you’re not dead yet.” - Master Chief, GI Jane
No you know what I have something to say.
Treat yourself gently.
It is not bad to treat yourself gently.
It is not bad to go to bed early when you’re so tired you could drop. It is not bad to let yourself say no to going out with people when you know you feel sick. It is not bad to say no to joining a club when you know you’re overcommitted, even if said club looks good on a resume or whatever.
It is not bad to lay in bed and read a book. It is not bad to do a face mask. It is not bad to have an extra shower just to feel the water. It is not bad to sip your favorite drink even if you know it’s late or there’s not much left or you’re on a (not-medically-required) diet.
It is not bad to get yourself out of a situation that, in any capacity, could hurt you. Emotionally, physically, or mentally. It is not bad to replace it with something you love.
Take a moment. Assess your boundaries. Catch your breath.
And then push through them.
You treat yourself gently so that you can build up strength. You treat yourself gently so that you can find your way again. You treat yourself gently so that you don’t hurt yourself or others because you’ve become so overwhelmed you can no longer see the way forward.
And then you push on.
You grow. You change. You try new things and make new friends. You may not (probably won’t) like everything you do. That’s fine. That’s also part of growth. Step back, treat yourself gently, recover, and step forward in a different direction.
Keep going.
Because one day, you will find that thing that makes you glow. You will find that thing that makes you so happy you could burst. You will find a way that makes you happy. It may not be what you thought it was at the beginning. It may not be absolutely everything you ever dreamed. But you will be so happy, I promise you.
You are on a path made of fate. But as you walk it, it is important to stop and breathe, slow down and find your footing. If you sprint, you’re going to collapse three miles in. If you breathe, you can get so much farther.
And you could never have made it as far as you will without treating yourself gently.
