Autumn and hebe leaves and snail out the front at home, brown mushrooms and a stunning amethyst deceiver on a walk at Puttles Bridge in the New Forest on a rainy day today 19/10/2025 and a brown mushroom at Blashford Lakes yesterday. It felt very rewarding to see the amethyst deceiver a key mushroom species we like to see each year and one of my favourites that we'd trying to see for weeks on a walk which was so wet, just showing no matter the weather you never know what you'll see if you get out.

Other highlights on the walk were Carrion Crow, holly berries, tormentil and Chaffinch heard with many Starlings and Blue Tit heard enjoyed at home too. Another relaxing weekend enjoying autumn's delights.

07/07/18-Whitefield Moor in the New Forest and Lakeside 

Pictured: A Keeled Skimmer Dragonfly and a view along the Ober Water at a perfect place to visit on a very hot day before the football started, the Keeled Skimmer marks my second dragonfly picture this year since 2015 I have tended to take one a summer of these flighty insects so it’s quite something for me. Then from Lakeside this evening after the football a Small Skipper butterfly and view over one of the lakes.

Wildlife Sightings Summary: (Whitefield Moor) Two of my favourite butterflies the Silver-studded Blue and Large Skipper, Peacock, Brimstone, Large White, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Holly Blue, two of my favourite dragonflies the Keeled Skimmer and Golden Ringed-dragonfly, two of my favourite damselflies the Beautiful Demoiselle and Large Red Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Grey Wagtail, Carrion Crow, Blackbird, Mistle Thrush and Grey Squirrel. (Lakeside) One of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Woodpigeon, Swift, House Martin, some Herring Gulls attacking a Black-headed Gull, Small Skipper, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Green-veined White, Comma, Speckled Wood and another of my favourite dragonflies the Broad-bodied Chaser.

18/12/17-Whitefield Moor in the New Forest 

Pictured: Buzzard by the car park and on the other side of the road where we walked today a view showing how very beautiful it looked in December sunshine, Ruby and a panoramic view. We often seem to do this walk the other side of the road, a New Forest one I discovered for us, around Christmas and New Year. Last year we did it the day before Christmas and this year a week before. 

Wildlife Sightings Summary: A herd of one of my favourite mammals the Red Deer, I seem to have seen them many times this year and not just at Richmond and Bushy Park in the autumn as usual where I got close to them but twice in the New Forest lately in this area and my first this year at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire on a scorcher of a day when up there for our tenth Bird Fair. I also saw; one of my favourite birds the Buzzard, Robin, Blackbird, Redwing, Meadow Pipit and Carrion Crow.

10/12/17-Watery day with a visit to a flooded Ober Water at Puttles Bridge in the New Forest this afternoon 

With most of the country gripped by snow today the south is being itself in this situation, whether its a good thing or not would create a decent five minute debate, but today its only rain here but it made for a nice little theme throughout my Sunday. Firstly this morning it was very dark in my room and I took the first picture in this photoset of raindrops on my bedroom window. Then for our afternoon trip we were expecting maybe a washout so decided to head to one of our rainy day walks now, the Puttles Bridge part of the Whitefield Moor walk beside the Ober Water which is mostly sheltered by trees. I took the second picture in this photoset of the heath there as it actually brightened up and wasn’t the constant downpour we might have thought. 

However the key story of my day I think was that of a deluge. As we drove past Blackwater Arboretum on our way to Puttles Bridge I noticed Flechs Water just before it turned into Black Water had burst its banks, a result of a fair amount of rain in recent weeks really. My Mum said I bet the Ober Water would be the same and sure enough it was. To indicate this the third picture in this photoset is the one I took today and the fourth picture in this photoset is one from the exact same spot in September 2016. In this very same spot I also captured a flood that day on video earlier last year in January, which is in this post: http://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/138164245147/whitefield-moor-bridge-cut-off-by-flooding-to-the it wasn’t quite as flooded as that today. In the video is the bridge Whitefield Moor bridge that both pictures were taken from and the end of the bridge was cut off from the land by the flood. It was not like that today, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it got to that level again. 

Its strange to think I did Geography fieldwork in that river for my AS in September 2013, which involved wading into the river and taking measurements, with it being so deep and fast flowing today. I think I got videos on my phone on that day in January 2016 because I didn’t take my camera or didn’t have it out, my camera was with me today though so I decided to focus on trying to show the flood through a photograph instead. I feel I did that well but what I didn’t realise until I got home was that the one of the flooded Ober Water I chose to take forward was from that same bridge that got cut off and the one I got the picture of September last year. This was really good as it did allow me to compare what the water levels on the river is normally like against today’s when putting the images next to each other. 

Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite mammals the Red Deer running and quickly disappearing on the heath, it may be the firsts Red Deer I’ve actually seen in the New Forest, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush and Rooks.
