tinymusiccritic's Top 25 Albums of Q1 2014

So, three months into the year, and we've already been spoiled for choice. Maybe I've been feeling generous, but with five releases getting 90+ scores and 23 more getting 80+ scores, this is definitely turning into a stellar year for new music.

Q2 looks set to continue the trend too, what with new LPs from tUnE-yArDs, Swans, Sharon Van Etten, EMA, Todd Terje, and TMC's Most Anticipated Album of The Year Award recipient, Owen Pallett, set for release in the coming months.

Below is a list of what I consider to be the top 25 releases of the year thus far (in alphabetical order by artist to avoid spoiling the end of year best-of list fun!). Links to listen are provided.

Check Point

March 31 – end of the first quarter of 2014.  So how are we doing with our goals?  Anyone remember what you set out to do in 2014?  And if not maybe this is a good time to set your goals for the rest of the year.  Here is what I committed to and what I accomplished so far this year:

Life –

Do more with the Blog – so far no progress.  I have kept the posts going and need to amp up the idea of making it a bigger and broader platform

Yoga – My goal was to go to Yoga at least once a week.  – 12 weeks so far two Yoga sessions.  I am thinking this is still a good goal but it is unlikely I will get to once a week.  A few friends tell me if I ran less I could do this – I think they are right  J

Coaching – I think this one is going well.  I have worked with a few new trainees and they are doing great and accomplishing a lot so far this year. 

Learning –

Watch twenty videos a week by smart people. To date I am averaging 11 a week.  Some of the new (non-TED) videos are much longer (45 minutes) and so the time is building in my favor but not the diversity.  This will be a balancing act for the remainder of the year

Deepen my knowledge of nutrition and its role in high performance. – I have done a lot more reading on the topic and have written more about it than last year but overall I am sub-par on this one.  I am ok with this as I feel this topic ebbs and flows with the different needs of the THPL community and its members

Fitness –

A marathon a month – To date I have run four so I am one ahead of schedule and I am scheduled through June.  For this one I feel right on track and feel that I am learning what it means to be a marathon runner….evolving from someone who runs marathons.

Pullups - Do 100 pull-ups in less than eight minutes. My attempts so far have me at 8:45 –more work to do.  And I am tracking ahead of schedule on my year-end goal of 25,000 pull-ups with 8,560 pullups so far year to date

Running - My goal for the year is 2,500, YTD I have run 1,260 and I am essentially half-way to the yearly goal (oops).  I think I need to up the goal to 3,500 and see if I hold the weekly average of 90 miles that I have done since January 1.

And now the challenge is to think about how I can practically achieve the goals that I have set for myself for 2014.  I have nine months to go and will need all of them to be able to accomplish the goals that I set in January.  I do think that having goals and doing a quarterly (or monthly) check in makes you accomplish more.  I think it is what is unique about THPL.  We set a model for continuous goal setting and measurement accountability.  It is why, candidly, we have the opportunity to live a more fulfilled life.

I hope you can take a moment to revisit your 2014 commitments - or come up with some now.  Either way the process of thinking and reflecting is good for you regardless of how well or not that you have done.  It all is about the journey, after all…..
