Man I haven't been able to stop thinking about Val Kilmer!!!!! :( !!!!! I miss him!!!! I wanna watch all his movies!!!!! I wanna write fic for Iceman/Slider!!!! I'm so focused on school, and very often I'll blank out n think about Val. He had such long pretty hair in Heat. He is in one of my oldest cinematic experiences, The Saint. I really appreciated the fact that he gave Batman glasses.
This is not the type of things i normally post on here, this is a fandom blog after all. But it is also is a queer space and I think it is important to talk about what is happening in Mexico right now.
On the morning of the 13 of November 2023 the lifeless bodies of Ociel Baena 'Le Magistrade' and their partner Dorian Herrera were found in their home in Aguascalientes. Ociel Baena was the first openly non-binary magistrate in Latin America and was one of the biggest LGBT activist in Mexico. They did so much for the Mexican LGBT community including advocating for better queer representation in elections, they fought for non binary to be an option of gender in voter ids and passport being the first person to receive both. They were an advocate for the protection of trans women.
The authorities have said that it was a "crimen pasional" or "crime of passion" and the primary theory is that it was a murder suicide done by Dorian Herrera after a domestic fight. "Crimen pasional'" is a term that mexican authorities use to undermine crimes directed towards women and minorities and it is used to close cases quickly. Ociel received hate ranging from mocking remarks and comments in social media, nasty comments from members of congress and political candidates to death threats and the LGBT community (including me) believes that it was a Hate crime.
The reaction of the public has been horrible. From the media using masculine pronouns for them, people "correcting" and leaving insensitive comments in the post of people communicating and reacting to the news, respecting their pronouns and grieving. People outside the community care more about the "improper use of the spanish language" than the fact that someone is dead.
The events of the past few days have reenforce the fact that Mexico is not a safe people from marginalised communities, as a disabled queer woman I know that and is one of the reasons I moved as soon as I got the chance but not everyone is not that privileged. I really love my culture and country, the people, the food, the traditions, the music, but I also hate the culture of misogyny, homofobia and transfobia that is so prevalent in Mexico.
Queer people are scared but Le Magistrade fought for the ability to be freely yourself and freely being loudly Queer. So to honor them we are going to be loud, proud and not hide anymore, we are going to fight their fight. Rest in peace Magistrade.
LGBTQ immigrants and refugees arrive in the United States with horrendous histories of imprisonment, bodily harm, torture, and psychological trauma. These atrocities are inflicted on them by their own governments, countrymen, and, worst of all, friends and families. They have committed no crime, yet cannot live freely in their own countries due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Many have faced excruciating challenges to escape their home countries and travel to the United States, where they then face reprehensible treatment in immigration detention centers.
The Queer Detainee Empowerment Project (QDEP) assists folks coming out of immigration detention in securing structural, health/wellness, educational, legal, and emotional support and services. They work to organize around the structural barriers and state violence that LGBTQIA TS & GNC detainee/undocumented folks face related to their immigration status, race, sexuality, and gender expression/ identity. They are committed to assisting folks in building lives outside of detention, to breaking down the barriers that prevent folks from building fulfilling and productive lives, and to keeping queer families intact by demanding an end to deportations/ detention/ policing. They believe in creating a narrative of thriving, not just surviving.
You can support the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project as a creator in the 2022 FTH auction (or as a bidder, when the time comes to donate for the auctions you’ve won.)
