They translated it into italian, and commented; I translated the post into English (🤞).

« MXTX made a small revision to MDZS just yesterday, adding details about QHJ and Madame Lan's relationship. I'll translate it for you right away, I'm still super nervous!

After reading this excerpt, I went looking up the meaning of gentian in the language of flowers, and I feel a little… I don't even know how to describe it.

I will say for the record that I always disliked hedonistic interpretations of a qingheng-jun who was doing all that shit for fun and instead read more into the violence of Having To Produce An Heir and even dabbled into mutual noncon possibilities for the lan parents a few times. Which, luckily for me, I can still read into the revised text so I'm actually fine. I can tell miss mxtx wants me to think it's #romantic or whatever but idc. The text is the text and all the text gives us is that the lan elders had to go to madam lan to tell her to convince qhj to make babies and it worked. The clan got what it wanted and then both of them died.

(tags by @lgbtlunaverse ) yeah like what it comes down to is that insofar as there is a lan curse it's not a curse of love it's a curse of dedication to the sect causing incredible cruelty to those you purport to love. qingheng-jun does everything he does out of quote unquote love but ultimately the needs of the sect come first -- the imprisonment and the producing heirs via rape and the self-seclusion is all done not out of love for madam lan but out of the same priorities that lead to lxc killing jgy and lxc/lqr whipping lwj nearly to death. yknow. everything about the lan Cycles functions to demonstrate the extent to which the rules and the culture of silence and the drive for Perfection and the demand for unbreakable committed loyalty make it impossible for the heirs/leaders to 1) be people and 2) be Moral.

I'm probably about to be absolutely lambasted for this take, but I'mma say it anyways.

I've always been of the of the mind that Qingheng-jun and Madam Lan's relationship is more fraught with complexities than it seems. All we know is what Lan Xichen told Wei Wuxian, and he didn't even want to know why his mother killed his father's teacher. What else doesn't he know that he therefore cannot tell the audience?

If she did not wish to be with Qingheng-jun, why did she even agree to marry him? How could she have been forced? Why did she later even listen to the elders? She had enough ability to kill at least one man, arguably a very strong cultivator himself, what reason could she have had to have walked into the cage Qingheng-jun opened?

Ultimately, we only know that she might have come to love him rather than that she never ever did. The text is still fuzzy on what came before their marriage and subsequent isolations. I think the popular/widely accepted interpretation might be putting undue limitations to her abilities and who she could have been as a person.

And, if you're curious, my interpretation/supposition of what came before is this: Madam Lan, [insert preferred real name here], was a very powerful cultivator. She met Qingheng-jun and rejected his romantic advances but accepted his friendship; hence why she was still anywhere near Cloud Recesses. His teacher later committed some crime either against an innocent or someone she knew. Nobody listened to or dared to even bring forth their accusations because the teacher was a Strong and Well-Respected Man in a High Position (TM), and therefore she went to confront him herself. They argued, they fought, she won, he died. Qingheng-jun offered to marry her to spare her his clan's wrath (or to protect his clan from her blade if she was powerful enough). She agreed for [insert reason of choice here], and they were wed. He, obviously, had mixed feelings about all of this and locked himself away. She fell in love with him at some point. At some point they had Lan Xichen and then Lan Wangji. And then some years after Wangji was born, she died. How did she die? Murder by poison, maybe? And Qingheng-jun later died after being grievously injured during the Burning of Cloud Recesses.

Yes, I understand that my interpretation is generous to both Qingheng-jun and Madam Lan. Yes, I do understand that my interpretation leaves little room for either of them to be absolutely horrendous and evil people. For all I know, Teacher Lan just looked at Madam Lan the wrong way one day and she murdered him in cold blood ala Xue Yang. For all I know, Qingheng-jun lobbied those murder accusations after the "accidental" death of his teacher, forced her to marry him for her protection, and then locked himself away in pure guilt (he orchestrated his own teacher's death and used it as a trap); but not guilty enough to let her go.

So yeah.

Look In My Eyes!!! i even checked the og lines in cn while writing just to make sure i wasn't smearing poor lan-furen's name. but damn. i was played.

it would have been a great help to reassure wwx that the lan parents were indeed in Pure Love. but alas, lxc and wwx haven't unlocked that friendship level yet, lol. save it as hidden dialogue for later i guess (づ◡﹏◡)づ

for context, the lines I saw floating around were these, when lxc is explaining his origin story and gets right to tooting the flute afterwards (super rough tl by me):

They (the elders) didn't dare to demand accountability from the woman any longer, and sought her aid instead. Because after Fuqin had locked himself up, he was unwilling to see anyone. With no other way, the elders had to resort to desperate measures, and were forced to ask that woman to implore him.

她什么都没做，只是在我父亲院子前的台阶上放了一朵龙胆。

She did nothing, only placing a gentian flower on the steps before my Fuqin's courtyard.

后来，就只有母亲能去看望他。她永远有办法让我父亲把门打开。她甚至不需要说一句话。
