"Operatika is redefining opera for a new generation. The brainchild of multi-hyphenate creator, YouTuber, writer, singer, and pole dancer, Khadija Mbowe, Operatika is a passionate collective of singers, musicians, and artists who push the boundaries of operatic performance. We create experiences that are sincere, sarcastic, fun, and CAMP—challenging operatic tradition and social norms for a new generation of opera lovers.  

Our debut production, "Arias of Seduction," blends opera, burlesque, the art of pole dance, eroticism, and a heavy dose of intrigue in a 100 minute live performance. We think you'll agree that "Arias of Seduction" is a boundary-pushing, unforgettable experience that audiences will adore!

Embark on a Journey of Self-Discovery Through Desire

Operatika's inaugural live show, Arias of Seduction is an enthralling operatic presentation that delves into the intricacies of human desire. The show will be a mesmerizing experience with a musical lineup of operatic arias, including renowned pieces like “Je Veux Vivre” (from Romeo and Juliet) and “Habanera” (from Carmen), and maybe even a few pop songs with an Operatic rendition! 

Since the spring of 2024, the cast and crew have been working to create this evening of performance that’s not to be missed! 

What? An Interdisciplinary Spectacle:

Arias of Seduction transcends traditional opera by integrating various art forms. In addition to powerful vocals, the performance incorporates dance and theatrical elements to craft a visually captivating and dynamic spectacle. In particular, Operatika celebrates and welcomes pole-dance as an expressive artistic practice.

Infused with humour, introspection, and the unparalleled resonance of operatic voices, Arias of Seduction celebrates the significance of self-discovery, inviting the audience to embrace their own authentic desires. Join Operatika for "Arias of Seduction” to immerse yourself in this stimulating and uplifting operatic journey. 

Who? The Operatika Community

We expect Operatika’s fanbase to mirror Khadija‘s online audience—a community of highly engaged Gen-z and Millenials hailing from over 30 counties worldwide, and diverse (many identify as LGBTQ+, BIPOC and or QTBIOPIC) people who are hungry for artistic expression, self-discovery, and social awareness.  

How? The Cast:

The show includes a cast of 5 incredible dancers (Shaping Sarah, Alix Veilleux , Raymond Jordan Johnson-Brown, Lychee Storm, and Amethyst) who will bring the arias to life, a chorus of 4 opera singers (Patricia Yates, Stephanie Sedlbauer, Chelsea Pringle-Duchemin, Mihnea Nitu ) who will perform with Khadija throughout the evening; a pianist (Benjamin Kwong) who’ll provide live accompaniment, and of course, a host (Kim Ninkuru) to keep us entertained between performances. Our talented team of local artists are the bread and butter of this production, and none of this would be possible without them! 

Why we need your support

We reject the “starving artist” archetype and believe that financially supporting creative work is imperative. All the artists involved in Arias of Seduction will be compensated at industry rates— meaning that more than 90% of this project's budget will go towards artist fees.

Risks and challenges

We’re less than 30 days away from curtain call! With such a tight timeline, our ask is URGENT! If we don't meet our goal, we'll have to scale back the show... which we really don't want to do, since we believe so strongly in the vision we’ve carefully crafted over the past 12 months! As a creator, Khadija has a track record of putting on innovative, thoughtful, and community-oriented content. I just need to get this out of my system while I'm thinking about it.

I'm tired of hearing the word queer used by people who fit society's image of "normal" to describe people who don't. Whenever I see a group saying that they are "queer-friendly" it strikes a bad nerve for me. To me, it feels like they might as well be saying "fag-friendly". Maybe it's just because I'm used to hearing both words (queer and fag) used in the same context and with the same tone of voice. When I came out as bi to a couple of people in middle school, the whole school knew within a week. During freshman year, a group of girls constantly called me queer and fag while we were in the locker rooms where the coach couldn't hear. They told me to stop looking at them (I had become accustomed to looking at the ground long before this, just in case anyone got the wrong idea and became upset, so I was certainly not looking at them) and forced me to leave the bathroom when they were in there. I was lucky (and very thankful) that there was one girl in the group who felt bad for me and didn't seem to dislike me. I didn't have any friends in gym class, so she tried to get me to hang out with that group whom she told to be nice to me just so that I wasn't alone. It didn't really work. The insults in my face turned to whispers behind my back, which bothered me a lot more. I ended up staying with our coach for the majority of class, talking about books and what not.

I'm getting a bit off topic.

I stopped dating girls because I couldn't deal with people who used my sexuality as a weapon against me. I felt horrible about myself for that whole semester. I still feel horrible when I think about it. So yes, I am bothered when groups say they are queer-friendly, even though I know they don't mean it in the way I take it. It brings back bad memories and it makes me feel terrible again.

I think that groups and companies should say that they support equality, or that they welcome everyone. Saying that they are queer-friendly hits me as if they're saying we aren't normal and we don't belong in society, but they will still be nice to us because it looks good for them.
