Chapter 2: “The dark woods and the hound”
Darkness surrounded them as Light and Mist ran into the woods leafs crunching under their feet. They ran deeper and deeper into the dark forest, the trees stretching far into the sky. They ran till they couldn’t see the orphanage anymore and soon stopped. It was quiet, silent, too silent, and Light saw it, Mist saw it too, a pair of white, pearly eyes staring at them. “W-what… what is that Light-t…?” Mist asked squeezing his hand tightly.
“I don’t know…” Light spoke, voice entering his voice as he began to back away, holding her hand. The eyes began to move closer, closer, till Light and Mist could see where the eyes came from. A tall, pale, skeletal man, his head in the darkness but does eyes. Those pale, pearly eyes, watching them this thing wanted them to run.
The thing charged at them. Light and Mist began to run the undergrowth crunching underfoot. They ran faster and faster but that thing was always just behind them. Than it smacked Light into the ditch and grasped Mist as she yelled “Light! Help..!” As the man ran away into the darkness on all fours like a Hound, leafs and twigs crunching as Mist screams and cries faded. Light rolled into the ditch his head thumping with pain, his whole body hurt, he laid there in the ditch his head throbbing. Then he heard something from the bushes.
Slowly from the bush came… another boy, his skin covered in dirt and scars, this boy wore an old raincoat covered in dirt and dust color faded, twigs in his hair. “Who are you..?” Light asked confused and cautious. The wild boy approaches and kneels in front of him and pokes him, poke, poke. “Stop that..! It’s rude to touch people you just-t met..” Light snarked. The boy stopped and look at Light then stood up and offered his hand. Light hesitates for only a second then grabs the boy’s hand. The boy helped Light up to his feet. “Thanks… to you have a name…?”
The boy looked at him confused and shrugs, beginning to walk away. “Hey… look that….. that thing took my sister and I need to find her….. can you please help me..?” Light asked desperately as he caught up with the boy. The boy turned back and looked and Light for a long moment and then turns fully nodding. “Thank you…. Whatever your name is… you are gonna need name I can’t just call you wild kid, or whatever…..” Light spoke to the boy. “How about Bush yeah? Yeah I’m gonna call you Bush if you don’t mind, you don’t mind…?” Light asked the boy.
The boy looked at Light and said “Boo….sh…?” Confused. “Yeah… you came out of a bush so…. Bush…” Light responded. “Boo..sh..” Bush said repeating it to himself. “….. yeah Okay Bush…. Do you know where that thing took my sister…?” Light said to Bush. Bush nods and turns to begin walking beckoning Light to fallow. They walked in silence, leafs crunching under their feet as they reached a clearing with a large tree and by it a small patch of disturbed dirt. Light looked at it for a moment before he saw Bush climb the tree. Few moments later 5 sharped sticks drop to the ground as Bush climbs down the tree.
“Take..” Bush said to Light flatly as he grabbed the sticks and put 2 of them into his coat. He then holds the third one and tosses the one of the remaining two to Light, who catches it. Bush gestures for Light to fallow him deeper into the dark woods. Bush and Light navigated the woods, past the remains of dead animals, dead adults, and avoiding primitive traps. The two even pass by an abandoned cabin that looked like it was attacked by something. The two walked farther into the woods, passing a hallowed log, leafs and branches crunching underneath their feet.
The bugs clicking and birds crippling through out the night then it all went silent. Bush looked scared as he grabbed Light, “HIDE” Bish said his face full of fear as he pulled Light towards the log franticly. The two boys crawled into the log staying close, holding their sharpened sticks. As then something from the darkness steps out, the crunching of leafs outside of the log. Something sniffing, as the two see a pale, hairless snout from the end of the log, the snout sniffing before that thing stood up and its footsteps growing distant but the sound did not return, that thing was still out there.
Light could feel his heart pounding like crazy. Then something rushed against the log slamming against it. Bush and Light are sent into the wall of the log but they did not have long to recover. As a clawed hand smashes into the log near them almost grabbing Light. The hound was snarling and growling as it tried to grasp Light, its other hand banging against the log soon to break through too. Brush grab his spear (sharpened stick) and stab it through the Hound’s hand. The Hound lets out an inhuman scream and it retreats quickly into the dark woods, dripping blackened crimson blood. Light was gasping, scared, horrified. Bush grabbed his wrist and pulls him outside the log and the two began to run away.
Bush and Light run for quite some distance, till Bush stopped grabbing Light. Standing before them was the entrance to a cave with a trail of blood leading into it, the darkness striking fear into both of them. The smell of rot and death flowed from it. The two of them know they have reached the Den of the monster. Light suddenly dug into his pocket and pulled a lighter, lighting it after a few tries. Bush holds his sharpened stick as they enter the den. The two enter the den, piles of bones line the walls. Walking deeper and deeper into the cave. Till they arrive to a chamber. A pile of pellets in a piles and in the back a primitive cage made of bones and sticks. Someone was in it.
“Mist…?” Light asked quietly his voice filled with hope yet also fear. The child in the sage looked up. It was Mist hiding under her box. “L-light-ht….?” She called out quietly, her voice filling with hope. “It’s me sis it’s me…” Light said as he and Bush approached the cage, Bush began to examine it for weak points. “… w-who’s that…?” Mist asked looking at Bush. “He’s… he’s my friend Mist.. he helped me get here…. We’re gonna get you out of this… cage thing..” Light responded with. Bust began to pull on the cage’s bone bars, it pulled towards him but held. Bush signaled for Light to come and try as well. Then both Light and Bush pulled on the cage bars, the wood and bones pulling against the wrapping holding it together. Then with and snap the side of the cage Light and Bush were pulling on broke and fell open.
Light ran to Mist hugging her tightly and she returned the hug with equal force, she began to cry and so did he. Bush stood there awkwardly. The two siblings let go of each other holding each other’s hand as they and Bush run out of the Den then outside they stop. It was silent, as they looked around and saw it, a pair of white pearly eyes. Those pearly white eyes were watching them. It was waiting for them to run. Bush grabbed Light and Mist by the wrists and began to run pulling them behind him. The hound follows and IT follows them. They ran through the woods, the hound gaining speed behind them. Twisting and turning through the woods but the hound loomed closer with every second. Mist looked up into the sky and saw a large shadow like a bird flying overhead, eyes across its body, those eyes staring down at them. Bush the one in front saw it a trench in the ground, a broken bridge on the two sides of it. Bush looked back at Light and Mist and began running faster and then he jumped.
Catching himself on the bridge and he quickly climbed up and held out his arms for Light and Mist both hesitated while running before jumping across the trench. Grabbing Bush’s hands and Bush swing them up and they keep running as the hound jump over the trench. Pulling itself up onto the over side. The hound still gives chase. The children keep running ducking under large exposed roots and bushes. But it did not give up its pursuit of them. The three children reach a river and turn left to run down it. The hound fallows from the woods. The three keep sprinting down the river, The hound still chasing them down. Bush sees it an old wooden door on the bed of the river, he begins forming a plan.
As soon as they reached the door Bush pushes Light and Mist onto it. Bush as quickly as he can pushes the door into the river, taking all the strength he could muster. The hound bolts from the woods towards Bush the moon light casting dark shadows from them. The hound lungs at Bush. Mist looking in horror but Light. Light without thinking runs forward, his hands outstretched in front of him. The light from the moon, concentrated fired from his hands and into the Hound’s eyes, sending both of them back. Light falling back onto Mist, The hound landing on its back clutching at its eyes releasing inhuman screams of pain as it stood to run away back into the woods. Light feels blood streaming from his nose, he’s quick to wipe it with his sleeve. Bush quickly swims to the door climbing aboard and the three kids sit around each other as the door goes down stream. Bush looks at Light intensity and smiles a bit. “Thank you..” Bush said trying to catch his breath.
“You’re wel-“ Light begun to say as his eyes roll back and he goes unconscious. “Light..! Light..! What’s-s we-wrong..!?” Mist cried as she held him. “….He is tired….” Bush said as he sat by Mist. “…W-Who are you-u…?” Mist asked realizing she has no idea who this boy that help safe her is. Bush hesitated for only a moment before saying “Bush… name is Bush. I am his friend…”. Mist looked at Bush then down at Light. “I’m glade he met a new friend.” Mist said smiling slightly. “Friend going to be alright..?” Bush said struggling to say some words. “I don’t know…” Mist said her concern bubbling up to the surface.
“Friend is gonna be okay.. friend” Bush said trying to comfort Mist. “Yeah… he’s gonna be alright..” Mist said. The door raft floated down the river.
